Confronting Workplace Bullies: A Guide for F&B Professionals

Workplace bullying and harassment is an ongoing challenge in the fast-paced, high-stress food and beverage (F&B) industry. But as members of this dynamic sector, we don't have to accept this as the norm. We deserve to feel safe, respected, and empowered in our workplaces. And with the right approach, we can work together to address these issues and create more positive, collaborative work cultures.
Leadership is not bullying and leadership is not aggression. Leadership is the expectation that you can use your voice for good. That you can make the world a better place. -Sheryl Sandberg
It's important to understand that workplace bullying is never your fault. Bullies often target those they perceive as vulnerable, competent, or threatening to their own insecurities and shortcomings. Some common contributors to bullying in the F&B world include high-pressure environments, intense competition, and a culture that has normalized aggressive behaviors. The "Peter Principle" also plays a role, wherein employees are promoted to their level of incompetence - leading to insecure, underqualified managers lashing out at their reports.
90% of workplace harassment is never officially reported.
While these factors may explain the prevalence of bullying, they don't justify it. As members of the F&B community, we have a responsibility to speak up and demand better working conditions. Not only is bullying harmful to individual mental health, but it can also severely damage team morale, productivity, and the overall health of the workplace. By addressing it head-on, we have the power to transform our workplaces for the better.
So what steps can you take if you find yourself dealing with a bully in your F&B workplace?

Ultimately, addressing workplace bullying is about more than just protecting ourselves. It's about upholding the values of respect, inclusivity, and mental wellness that should be the foundation of any healthy work culture. When we allow bullying to go unchecked, we risk eroding the collaborative spirit and community that make the F&B industry so vibrant and rewarding.
I'm hopeful that we can come together as an industry to create workplaces where each employee feels empowered, respected, and able to do their best work. Speak up when you witness bullying, and offer support to colleagues who are struggling. By taking a stand, we can build teams that are more productive, cohesive, and committed to excellence.
The path forward may not be easy, but the rewards will be immense.
