Imagine you're on a journey. You know where you want to travel, but without a map, you might end up lost, wandering aimlessly. The same applies to business. Without a clear understanding of the problem you're solving, you risk losing your way. Let's dive into why confronting the problem is necessary. Because it is the key to building a strong brand and creating impactful content. You'd be surprised how easy it can be to generate leads.
The Common Pitfall: Solution-Focused Answers
When I ask business owners, "What problem do you solve and for whom?" I often hear about their services, how they help, or the benefits they provide. While these are essential, they skip the most crucial part: the problem. Imagine asking for directions and only hearing about the landmarks you’ll see along the way, but not how to get there. It’s confusing, right?
We often think we’re communicating effectively by detailing our solutions. But unless we define the problem, our audience can’t fully grasp our services' value. It's like selling antivirus software without mentioning about dangers of data loss.
Without context, our audience may not understand why they need our product.
Focusing on the Problem: A Necessary Step
To truly connect with your audience, you need to clearly state the problem they face. When you do this well, something magical happens. People believe you understand their struggles better than they do. And when they feel understood, they naturally assume you have the solution they need.
But merely focusing on the problem can sometimes lead to dwelling on negative thoughts and feelings. It can make the problem seem insurmountable, like staring at a massive mountain without a plan to climb it. This is where a subtle shift in mindset can make a huge difference.
Confronting the Problem: A Path to Empowerment
Instead of focusing on the problem, confront it. Think of confronting the problem as taking charge and facing it with a plan and determination. It's like standing at the base of that mountain, ready to tackle the climb because you have the right gear and a detailed map.
Confronting the problem is about acknowledging its presence and planning a course of action. It’s proactive, confident, and empowering.
It shifts the narrative from "This problem is overwhelming" to "I can handle this problem, and here's how."
Why Confronting the Problem Works
1. Clarity and Direction
Just as a map gives you a clear path, confronting the problem gives you a clear understanding of what needs to be done. It prevents you from getting lost in the details of your solutions before your audience understands why they need them.
2. Confidence and Trust
When you describe a problem precisely, your audience feels understood. They trust you because you understand their challenges. Trust is the foundation of a strong relationship and a successful business.
3. Motivation and Action
Confronting the problem isn’t just about identifying it; it’s about gearing up to tackle it. You and your audience will feel more in control and ready with this mindset.
How to Confront the Problem in Your Business
领英推荐
1. Identify the Core Issue
Start by asking, "What is the real problem my audience is facing?" Look beyond surface-level symptoms to uncover the underlying issue.
2. Communicate Clearly
Describe the problem in simple, relatable terms. Avoid jargon and focus on the real-world impact of the problem. For example, instead of saying, "We optimize your sales funnel," say, "We help you stop losing customers who leave your website without buying."
3. Highlight the Consequences
Explain what happens if the problem isn’t addressed. This creates a sense of urgency and importance. Use vivid imagery to make the consequences clear and tangible.
4. Show Your Solution as the Hero
Once the problem and its consequences are clear, present your solution as the hero of the story.
The Impact on Your Business
When you confront the problem effectively, your audience sees you as a trusted guide. They’ll come to you not just because of your solutions, but because you understand their journey. They’ll be more likely to ask for your help and buy your products because you’ve articulated their needs better than they could themselves.
In business, like in travel, the first step to success is knowing exactly where you are and where you need to go. Confronting the problem provides clarity and direction. It transforms challenges into opportunities for growth and empowerment. So, take a step back, define the problem you solve, confront it with confidence, and watch your business journey become a path to success.

Key Takeaways:
- Understand and clearly define the problem your audience faces.
- Confront the problem with a proactive, empowering approach.
- Communicate the problem and its consequences effectively to build trust and clarity.
- Position your solution as the hero, guiding your audience to overcome their challenges.
When you describe the problem better than they can, you don't have to sell the solution; people will come to you naturally.

It’s proactive, confident, and empowering. " I would like to advance this if I may.... Two thoughts came to mind: 1) A boxing ring- You have to be strategic in your plan in action. Yes, get ready for the swatting "paw" / action of what your metaphorical "feline' is aka (the opponent, mountain, giant, etc.", LOL! 2) Tangible goals to addressing the problem- I liken goals to stepping stones to solving or accomplishing one's mission and of course they need to be SMART and ensure that we break them down into short term, intermediate, and long-term goal. Most importantly, positive reinforcement is crucial as each goal is met no matter how minute the reinforcement is :)
