Confronting the ‘H’ Word

Confronting the ‘H’ Word

A hero, by definition, is “a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.”

In the almost 14 years since Flight 1549, on countless occasions, I have been called a hero.?

I have resisted that appellation.

I have never considered myself a hero. On January 15, 2009, I was fulfilling, along with my crew, my professional responsibilities as a pilot to transport our passengers and ensure their safety.?

The word, unfortunately, is one that is overused, which is a shame, because, when used appropriately, it describes the best of what it means to be human. Being a hero means making significant sacrifices, sometimes greatly, in service of a cause greater than oneself. And that is a potential that we all possess.?

Throughout my life, I’ve been fortunate to have witnessed firsthand the important work of several organizations which do just that.

In this special Giving Tuesday edition of my newsletter, I want to highlight the groups and organizations that have made an impact on many lives, and that have shaped my perspective of heroism and what it means to me.?

Guide Dogs for the Blind

Guide Dogs for the Blind began in 1942 as a Veterans organization that served to help visually impaired veterans. There were limited resources when the organization first started, but now GDB serves over 50 states and Canada, expanding opportunities for everyone involved.??

Our family has volunteered for Guide Dogs for the Blind for over 30 years.

Guide Dogs for the Blind provides people who have visual impairments with a working Guide Dog at no cost to them, allowing them to regain their independence and freedom. One of the most rewarding things about GDB is the positive impact this program has had on not only the guide dog owners but our family as well. We absolutely adore this program and appreciate the devotion of each of the volunteers, ambassadors and partners.?

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital

We have been longtime supporters of the good work of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The patients at St. Jude have shown incredible resilience while battling deadly diseases that no one should ever have to face. We would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to St. Jude’s dedicated healthcare professionals and their patients. Nothing is more heroic than saving a child's life.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of America

Big Brothers Big Sisters creates and supports one-to-one mentoring relationships while promoting the mental health and overall well-being of children across America.?

Big Brothers Big Sisters always holds a special place in our hearts. 38 years ago, my wife Lorrie was introduced to her “match”, Sara, through Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, before Lorrie and I had even met. Sara quickly became a wonderful and important part of our lives and has been ever since.?

We love this program, and hearing the positive impact and stories is incredibly rewarding.

Fisher House Foundation

Last but not least, I would like to highlight the Fisher House Foundation, an organization that supports America’s military in times of need. They are committed to rebuilding lives and serving the brave men and women who served fearlessly to protect our nation. For the last 32 years, Fisher House has provided a sense of community, which gives patients and families the opportunity to share their experiences and heal from trauma.?

We encourage those with the means to consider donating to these organizations to further support their mission. It is just one way to support the heroes who are making our world a better place.

Your comments make a very good point. Circumstances seems to be the common denominator. I'm impressed with the crew on the AB350 at Haneda Airport Japan. While the crew did their job, and the outcome was not carried as a heroic event. The results were positive, making it less sensational for the press to cover. I have no doubt that those crewmembers were dealing with plenty of stress and anxiety. We all too often are involved in circumstances not of our making that require our best game to just survive. In that, then I do call it Heroic. Even the discipline and attention of the passengers in the accident were outstanding in every way.
