Confrontation and Change

Confrontation and Change

In a healthy environment, confrontation is natural, and change is necessary.

As leaders, we must embrace both, even though confrontation and change can be uncomfortable and exhausting.

Confrontation often serves as an early indicator of disruption, signaling the need for attention and action, and the results of an effective confrontation can lead to clarity, innovation, and growth.
Change is a complex and multifaceted process that demands our attention, empathy, and adaptability as leaders, and it provides a host of variables and stressors for everyone involved.

Confrontation!!

When we are confronted, it often triggers an acute stress response, “Fight or Flight”, sparking a physiological reaction as if our lives are in danger.

And yes, it can be scary, uncomfortable, and awkward, but aren’t these feelings a prerequisite for development and growth?

So how do you go about initiating confrontation and change?

We’ve all heard the meme-able phrases:

  • “With all due respect...”
  • “No offense, but...”

What’s important about these sentence starters is that framing matters.

When initiating or welcoming confrontation, the proper setting is extremely important.

Just as with a piece of art, the frame or setting in which it’s placed can elevate or deteriorate its message.

  • A private setting is always best.
  • Facts always win the argument.
  • Provide solutions for the problem.
  • Preparation breeds professionalism.
  • Remember it’s all about the team effort.

Change!!

Most people want change, whether it's in their personal or professional lives, but few want the friction that comes with it.

Despite the constant calls for it, change isn’t free and it has a social, emotional, and physical cost.

We’re all capable of initiating and implementing change within ourselves and our environment, but we must be willing to sacrifice our resources of time, energy, and focus to do so.

When we are confronted with a situation that challenges our personal or professional values, we can do three things:

  • Ignore it
  • Accept it
  • Change it

What will you choose?
