“Cultures affect the ways we name, frame, blame, and attempt to tame conflicts.”
– Michelle LeBaron (2003). (Conflict transformation scholar/practitioner at the University of British Columbia Faculty of Law)
An individual’s approach to challenge and conflict will depend on cultural values, communication preferences and whether the individual evaluates the conflict from their cultural perspective or from multiple perspectives.
The five intercultural conflict styles below are based on the?Thomas & Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument?and Stella Ting-Toomey’s?(Ting-Toomey & Oetzel, 2001)?intercultural approach to conflict.
Each of us is capable of using all five conflict-handling strategies. None of us may have a single style of dealing with conflict. But certain people use some strategies better than others and, therefore, tend to rely on those strategies more heavily than others—whether because of cultural values and preferences or just practice.
