Conflict is disruptive and can lead to decreased performance and confrontational relationships. Some project managers attempt to eliminate conflict to maintain a harmonious state. However, not all conflicts are negative, and the use of certain types of conflict management can lead to positive results and stronger relationships.
Conflict management can be divided into five styles: avoiding, dominating, integrating, compromising and obliging. Avoiding and dominating styles are considered competitive conflict management approaches and tend to lead to negative outcomes. Integrating, compromising and obliging are cooperative conflict management styles. These styles focus on others more than oneself and are associated with positive communication and constructive problem-solving.
