Dear Empowered Woman,

Did you know that women are often perceived as less confident than men, even when they demonstrate equal competence? According to a study by the Institute of Leadership and Management, 50% of women managers report self-doubt about their performance and careers, compared to less than a third of men. This disparity highlights the importance of confidence in securing leadership positions and thriving in them.

Today, we’ll explore strategies for building and demonstrating confidence to help women leaders secure their seat at the table.

Have you met Emily?

Emily, a talented marketing director, came to me feeling undervalued and overlooked for promotions. Despite her expertise and dedication, she struggled with self-doubt and felt her contributions weren’t recognized. Through just a few coaching sessions and Emily’s efforts, Emily learned to identify and overcome her confidence barriers. She practiced to assert herself by set clear boundaries, and celebrated her progress. In just 4 months, Emily’s newfound confidence led to increased recognition from her peers and superiors, giving her a strong rating in her mid-year review last month.

Why is confidence so critical for effective leadership?

Confidence influences how others perceive you, how you make decisions, and how you inspire and lead your team. In the New Paradigm of leadership, which values inclusivity and emotional intelligence, confidence is not about being the loudest voice in the room but about being self-assured, authentic, and resilient. Without confidence, women may find it challenging to assert their ideas, negotiate effectively, or take on new opportunities.

Why it matters in the New Paradigm vs. Traditional Leadership

  • New Paradigm: Emphasizes authentic confidence, self-assurance, and the ability to inspire and lead through inclusion and emotional intelligence.
  • Traditional Leadership: Often equates confidence with dominance and authority, which can disadvantage women who demonstrate leadership differently.

Practical tips and strategies to build confidence

  1. Self-Awareness and Reflection
  2. Set Clear Goals
  3. Communicate Assertively
  4. Seek Feedback and Mentorship
  5. Celebrate Your Achievements
  6. Embrace Challenges

Try this!

This week, I invite you to identify one area where you feel less confident and take a small step to address it. Whether it's speaking up in a meeting, seeking feedback from a colleague, or celebrating a recent achievement, take that step towards building your confidence. Notice the impact this has on your self-assurance and how others perceive you.

Confidence is a key component of leadership, especially in the New Paradigm that values authenticity and emotional intelligence. By developing and demonstrating confidence, women leaders can secure their seat at the table and inspire others to do the same. Remember, confidence is about taking action despite doubts, that will continue to validate your self beliefs.

What do you think is the leading cause of self-doubt in especially females? I really do relate to this feeling and partly I am guessing that there is a huge amount of imposter syndrome going on as well in many women.
