Confidence in Selling
Saturday I was in a Supermarket close to home (I don't have particular one) and while browsing the aisles a young promoter came up to me and timidly offered to sell me some teas. Usually I would get annoyed and say I don't want anything, as I am one of those who doesn't like my supermarket excursion to be interrupted. Instead I decide to use this as a teachable moment.
Firstly I stopped the young lady and advised that people react better to someone who is confident in their demeanor. You will not get through the imaginary door if your knock is weak and feeble.
Having built up confidence the approach must be never be can I interest you in buying product. Start of with pleasantries, a nice greeting, a compliment. It is amazing how saying good morning/afternoon/evening disarms the the customer. Examine the situation and offer a compliment that may lead to a conversation. Those crackers are go well as mid-morning snack. I like mine with tuna how do you like yours? Invariably some may stop but the vast majority will continue walking.
Be attentive. If you are trying to sell tea while chatting glance at the trolley/basket and see what else they have picked up that goes well with. This means that you have to do your research as well.
You must be prepared to offer the same level of enthusiasm to every customer. So be prepared to be engaged.
Do not disparage competitors products in a bit to sell yours. Know what it is you are selling and make those your selling points. Always suggest why they should try your product as many times they are very loyal to other products and may be offended if you trash talk them.
Finally you cannot feel down because the person didn't buy or you talk to 100 persons and only 3 bought. Most persons will pass but at least you have 3 customers who can tell 6 others.
After this chat, before I left the supermarket the young lady gleefully came to me and said it worked. Tea company you owe me.
