? Confidence ? Play ? Character ? Assumptions ? Stand ?

It's Major League Baseball (MLB) Opening Day in the US and Canada. Well actually, I think it was yesterday. I always thought it was April 1, but here we are. In fact, there were games 10 days ago in Tokyo Japan. So kind of like Black Friday, it's expanding in time and locations.

But it's the spirit that counts. Everyone starting a new, fresh, records equal, everyone with the same change of winning the prize. And the smell of fresh cut grass. Easter or Opening Day, Spring has sprung in the Northern Hemisphere, the Equinox has passed, and the flowers are popping, birds chirping.

Find a place for peaceful thoughts, take a break from the madness. Grab a coffee with a friend you haven't caught up with lately.

This week's Friday Five, five posts that touched a nerve.

The Friday Five

Dunning Kruger

This is McArthur Wheeler. In 1995, he robbed two banks in Pittsburgh in broad daylight, with no disguise. He smiled at security cameras, fully believing he was invisible. Why? He had covered his face with lemon juice.

Thanks for sharing the Dunning Kruger Effect origin story Tina Reuter

You continue:

This story caught the attention of professor David Dunning and inspired him, alongside his graduate student Justin Kruger, to conduct a study to explore how people assess their own competence. In their 1999 paper, "Unskilled and Unaware of It," they found that when people lack knowledge or skill in a particular area, they often lack the ability to recognise their own limitations. In other words, the less we know, the more confident we may feel - because we don’t yet understand what we’re missing. This phenomenon became known as the Dunning-Kruger Effect.

And yes, it's a Super Power, especially when contrasted to the 180° degree different Imposter Syndrome.

We know what it is, but I find it hard to succinctly describe. And then I watched John Cleese provide the best description ever.

In order to know how good you are at something requires almost exactly the abilities that it does to be good at that thing in the first place.
There's a lot of people out there who have no idea what they're doing, but they have absolutely no idea that they have no idea what they're doing.
Those are the ones with the confidence and stupidity who finish up in power. That's why the planet doesn't work. - John Cleese

Play Ball - Opening Day

And I said, Roger Baugh, PMP (my boss), I'm here to kick butt and get stuff done. Whatever you need, I'm your right hand man. You give me any assignment, I'm a 24/7 shop.?And he's like, that's great, Bill, but, that's not why I'm here. I want to enjoy this experience. And so we'll get a lot of stuff done. But we're also going to enjoy it.?- Bill Schlough

In the US and Canada, today is Major League Baseball (MLB) Opening Day 2025.

A day of green grass, spring's eternal hope, every team starting the day with the same record and chance for a championship next fall.

So what better day to highlight one of my favorite clips, from a favorite in the world of sports, Bill Schlough , CIO of the San Francisco Giants. Taking a leave of absence to work the Olympics, someone showed him a different way to build relationships, to invest in the people who would ultimately be the instruments of success for the job at hand.

When the proverbial s#1+ hits the fan, you can pick up the phone to call for help, and a familiar voice answers the other end. Invest in the team.

Thanks for sharing Bill

Character First

Character first. That's not a person, a dog, a cat. You're not going to have misplaced expectations about the way that it interacts. Because it's a character, creating, this opportunity for people to create a bond with the machine through this character - Jeff Frick

Both the pace of humanoid robot development, and my opportunities to interact and engage with the machines, and minds behind them, have been accelerating like everything else.

What is fun to watch is the variety of approaches. Always get's back to 'What are you optimizing for' with an accompanying forced rank order of features, priorities.

When you start with relationship, initiated with animated video, before the patient even meets the Miroka? in real live, the connection may surprise you. And they're using it for good with children's cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy.

Oh, everybody knows

There has been a lot of assumption. ‘Oh, everybody knows’ what the objectives are here... When we ask 'Please list the top three objectives of this project team.' you'll see wildly different, interpretation of what the project goals are - Sacha Connor

Let's get aligned to what the goals are so that we can actually make progress against them. - Sacha Connor

Try it with your teams. Have them rank order the project's objectives. Force the rank order. The results may surprise you.

Sacha will be sharing more tips and tricks, insight and experience on a panel at Running Remote in Austin with Darren Murph Lauren DeYoung and Karrah Phillips

Stand Up

So stand up for your people. Or stand for absolutely nothing - Parry Headrick

When I got my first big career break, my first large sales territory, 30+ accounts, over $3M quota, spread out over 12,000 square miles of California central valley, Sierra Mountains, and Reno.

And I had to fire my biggest customer within the first 60 days, who accounted for over a third of my total sales. He was abusive, and not looking to work together for the win win.

Over a period of time, attitudes, objectives, and methods changed. We re-signed, and the account was one of my best. We became friends and successful partners. RIP Eddie.

Do the right things for the right reasons. Good things will follow. Karma is real. You'll sleep better at night.
