Confessions of a Project Manager: Navigating the Chaos and Charm of the Job

As I spend my 20s juggling overdue tasks and status trackers while my friends enjoy brunches and self-care days, I’ve come to realize that project management is one of those “Oh, bleep” jobs. It's a world where flexibility isn’t just a nice-to-have—it’s a survival skill.

Here’s a peek into the quirky reality of being a project manager as I've experienced this year so far:

  1. Getting Teams to Simply Talk Is Half the Battle: Ever tried herding cats? That’s what it feels like trying to get a team to communicate effectively. Coordinating schedules, aligning goals, and just making sure everyone is on the same page can be more challenging than the actual project itself.
  2. The Right Time to Think About Risks Is Before You Notice Problems: Planning ahead isn’t just a good practice; it’s a necessity. Risks and issues don’t wait for a convenient time to appear, so thinking ahead and having a contingency plan can save you from scrambling at the last minute.
  3. No One Is Thinking About Your Project as Much as You Are (And They Probably Should Be): You’re the project’s biggest cheerleader and its most critical eye. While you’re deep in the details, remember that the rest of the world might not be as invested. That’s why it’s up to you to keep everything on track and manage expectations.
  4. Do Something Once, and It’s Expected for Every Project in Perpetuity: If you introduce a new process or standard, get ready for it to become the norm for all future projects. Consistency is key, but it also means you’re setting precedents that others will expect you to maintain.

Being a project manager is no easy feat, and often our efforts go unnoticed because our work is intangible. There aren’t always measurable deliverables, but the success of a project often hinges on the unseen coordination and planning that we put in.

So, here’s to the project managers out there—if you’re spending your weekends crafting status trackers while others are out living their best lives, just know that your work is the glue holding everything together.
