Confessions of a Playlist Editor - Rorschach Tests and Spotify For Artists data. Part Two
It's really hard to unsee things isn't it?
Graphics can tell a powerful story where numbers cannot provide the same context. This is why data visualization speaks so strongly to us: It gives us a ton of information.
Don't get me wrong. There's absolutely plenty of people who can take data and make it sing with their voices. But we're not all Sinatras. I'm sure you know people who are so intimate with spreadsheets in a way that you worry for them around the holidays. You can be sure that I am neither of these types, yet I secretly long to find that spark of giftedness that provides the ability to see a finished, immaculately appointed apartment, when I am struggling to put together a desk from IKEA.
This is why these Spotify For Artists Rorschach Tests graphics are a way to vent/get some important ideas out there for you to apply to your own study and to hopefully help you ask better questions on how you're developing yourself and your artists.
So let's get to Part Two
The Dance Challenge - At least they're paying attention to the song on some platform. We could go on for a few hours on the merits of this or whatnot, but the issue here is that it's a moment in time. Time also tends to move on from the moment. Maybe you're only looking for a moment?
Ala Mode w/o Discovery - I guess you could have spent some money on ads or another tool maybe instead of taking less in Discovery Mode? It could be the song and that's sad to uncover when you discover. Kind of like paying for a slice of Apple Pie and forgetting the ice cream.

Ala Mode w/ Discovery & Retention - Do you want two scoops of ice cream with your pie? Yum. Yes please!
A big viral moment - Dang! Those hard core fans pre-saved the snot out of that track...Wonder what all of that front loading will look like after 28 days....
Not On My Radar - Some artists don't care (really!) but wow, when you miss the window for Release Radar, all sorts of bad happens...
Editors In Love - We're all human here. Someone at Spotify falls in love with a song and artist and they put it on a playlist. Happens to the best of us but.... that's a lot of exposure....ummm maybe too early? I certainly hope we can get a lot of others to fall in love with the song too. I have to tell you though that this look doesn't often end well.
Will They Put A Ring On It? - The fans seem to love this song Like a naked ring finger sticking out there, if they like it will the editors put a ring on it?
See you next time for Part Three
