The Confess Project of America (TCPA), a leading voice in the mental health advocacy field, recently announced they were awarded a grant from the Delaware Department of Health and Social Services.
According to TCPA's announcement, the funding is part of Delaware's State Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health Opioid Response Grant: Health Equity Advancement Project (HEAP), which offers grants for a wide range of organizations to implement approaches to engage racial/ethnic minorities who are impacted by opioid use disorder/stimulant use disorder (OUD/STUD).
Founder Lorenzo P. Lewis shared "this grant further equips us to tackle the opioid and stimulant crisis head-on and reach even more communities with culturally responsive mental health support."
Since 2016, The Confess Project of America has worked diligently to equip marginalized Black men and boys with mental health strategies and coping skills to help them move past their pain. They address suicide, which is the third leading cause of death within the African-American community.
"We exist to help change that. Our vision is a world without stigma and shame" states Lewis, a social entrepreneur and speaker who models his life around liberation.
Lorenzo witnessed the intersections of poverty and violence and learned that people need more support—they need pathways to careers, wealth, and liberation. He helped create a revolution in mental health through The Confess Project of America and in turn, it led him to look deeper inside himself. Born in jail to an incarcerated mother, Lewis struggled with depression and anxiety throughout his youth. At 17, he almost re-entered the system of mass incarceration he had come from. It was then he snapped in and began his journey to wellness.
With this funding, The Confess Project of America can provide more training, more resources, and, most importantly, more hope for those affected by addiction.
The mission of The Confess Project of America has always been about understanding, engaging, and addressing the needs of racial and ethnic minorities impacted by opioid use disorder and stimulant use disorder. This grant allows them to expand their reach and make an even bigger difference.
