The Conduit: A Dialogue on Knowledge, Courage, and Reflection
Louis Katz
Think of me as a mini MBA—minus the debt, plus a whole lot more fun. I teach leadership and courage through laughter, music, and real-world stories that stick.
It was late afternoon, and I found myself wandering the Agora, my thoughts churning. The marketplace bustled around me, filled with merchants haggling, children laughing, and the occasional clang of a blacksmith at work. But none of it reached me. My mind was elsewhere, stuck on a question that had been gnawing at me for days.
I don’t know what made me stop under that olive tree, but there he was—Socrates. He sat on a stone bench, his posture relaxed, his expression as calm and curious as ever. People passed by, some nodding in recognition, others stopping briefly to exchange a few words. I hesitated for a moment, unsure if my thoughts were worth his time. But as if sensing my hesitation, he looked up and smiled.
“Ah, Louis,” he said, his voice warm and inviting. “You’ve got the look of someone carrying a question. Come, sit. Let’s see if we can untangle it together.”
I took a seat beside him, the shade of the olive tree a welcome break from the heat. “Socrates,” I began, unsure of how to articulate what had been swirling in my mind. “I’ve been thinking about knowledge—where it comes from, and what we do with it. It feels to me like none of the ideas we have are truly our own. They come from somewhere else, like waves in the ocean. We’re just riders, passing them along and adding a bit of ourselves as we go. None of it is entirely original.”
Socrates tilted his head, his gaze sharpening. “So, you see yourself as a rider of ideas, not their creator?”
“Yes,” I said, leaning forward. “And that makes me wonder—if none of it is fully original, why do we doubt ourselves? Why not just trust the flow and pass the word along?”
He let out a soft chuckle, his eyes crinkling with amusement. “An intriguing thought. Tell me, Louis, have you ever watched a potter work at their wheel?”
“Of course,” I said. “It’s fascinating to watch how they shape the clay.”
“And where does the clay come from?” he asked, his tone patient but probing.
“From the earth,” I replied. “The potter doesn’t create it—they mold it.”
“Exactly,” he said, his voice lifting with energy. “The clay is not their creation, yet the potter does not hesitate to shape it. They do not sit idle, lamenting that the clay is not their own. They embrace their role. Why should you be any different?”
I blinked, letting his words sink in. “So even if the ideas aren’t entirely mine, shaping them still has value?”
“More than value,” Socrates said, his tone firm. “It has purpose. Like a bird that sings the song of its mother, you carry the ideas forward. But,” he added, leaning in slightly, “do you take care to understand the ideas before you pass them along? Or do you simply let them flow through you?”
I hesitated. “I try to reflect on them,” I said honestly, “but the flow is endless, and it moves so quickly.”
“Ah,” he said, nodding as though I’d just revealed a great truth. “To ride the wave is noble, but the true art lies in choosing the right wave. Not all waves lead to calm shores; some can dash you against the rocks. Reflection, Louis—this is your rudder.”
His words hit me like a steadying force. I’d been so focused on the act of riding the wave that I hadn’t considered the importance of choosing wisely, of understanding what I was passing along.
“So it’s not just about trusting the flow,” I said, more to myself than to him. “It’s about engaging with it, shaping it intentionally.”
Socrates smiled, a glimmer of approval in his eyes. “Precisely. To doubt yourself is to doubt the role you play in the flow. Trust in your voice, but temper it with thought and care. That is how you honor the ideas and those who will receive them.”
I sat there for a moment, the Agora fading into the background as his words settled over me. The flow of knowledge wasn’t something to fear or second-guess—it was something to respect, to engage with fully.
“Thank you, Socrates,” I said finally, standing to leave. “You’ve given me much to think about.”
He waved a hand, his smile deepening. “And that, my friend, is all I could hope to do. Now go,” he said with a hint of mischief in his voice, “ride your wave—and ride it well.”
