Condensation should be taken seriously

Condensation is the change of water from its gaseous form (water vapor) into liquid water. Condensation generally occurs in the atmosphere when warm air rises, cools and loses its capacity to hold water vapor.

It is amazing how various cultures can perceive the same issue differently. In our job as property managers, many a times we have come across condensation, and working in the UK, I thought it would be obvious that we should open our window after we had a shower, or if there is too much humidity in a room. This thought was based on my previous experiences living abroad in places such as Bermuda, Cyprus, Greece and Tunisia. After a conversation I had with my colleagues, they explained me that in the UK, due to the low temperature, people do not open their windows very often.

This took me back a few years ago when I was growing up in Cyprus. My mum is obsessed with opening the windows “to get some air” as she said, and because of the very high temperature, we should open the windows especially after we had a shower, so the walls can “breathe” as my dad used to say. Now I understand better the meaning of “walls breathing”. At least back then they didn’t have to wear a mask!

Then a few years ago, when I was living in Bermuda, I faced the same situation. Again, due to the high temperature, if we didn’t open the windows as our ventilation system, then we had condensation as a result and mould on the walls (which is not a joke). Also, if you ever go to the beautiful Bermuda, don’t leave your biscuits on the table, because you will invite hundreds of small bugs!

Having condensation can be very fatal to your health. I remember years ago we had a leak issue with our roof and we had lot of humidity, mould and fungi. This resulted in my mother suffering from severe pneumonia.

It is interesting how the same situation is been treated differently by people based on the location and the weather. What remains the same though is the damage that occurs firstly to our health and secondly to the building, which could result in costs being incurred.

As property managers and as a company, we try to create awareness and inform people of the consequences of the condensation, and that with just opening our windows, the problem might be resolved. My message through this article is that condensation, mould and fungi may be fatal especially, for people with a low immune system.

If you have this kind of problem to your property, please act quickly. You will save your time, money and health!

Thank you.

Hi Nadia. I posted an e-book on condensation. Well worth a look if you get a chance.
