The Concerto Diary - 5th Entries

I finally decided to forsaken the study I composed as basis for the second movement of my piano concerto (see the Concerto Diary previous entries – links below), and to create an entirely new piece, still using Mozart’s music as a starter. This new piece exceeded my expectations :
Although I was quite happy with the piano study I composed previously, this new piece quickly proved to be much better, and finally became the actual second movement of my concerto.
Just like the movement previously composed, this piece is viscerally classical in style, means of expression, purpose and hopefully result.
At it's very core, there are two Mozartian seeds I planted to grow my own music matter from.
After a minute and a half long orchestral introduction, the main theme of the first thematical group plays (1:32). Its beginning is a reminiscence of Mozart’s Fantasy for piano in D minor K.397. This main theme unfolds along the piece, in many variations.
The second theme of this first group (2:29) , which I call "the drop" (as in electro music), acts like a refrain. Its accompagnement on the strings is inspired by the second movement of Mozart’s piano concerto No. 23. There are five different instances of it during the piece : at 0:04, 2:29, 6:45, 9:16 and 10:09.
There’s also a little Mozartian Easter Egg at 06:10, where you can hear the theme of ? Voi che sapete ?, slowly played by the French Horn ^^
The second subject (3:14) is a joyful little theme, which came to me one morning, while I was preparing my coffee. I heard it in my mind and instantely wrote it down.
Contrary to the Classical habit, the second theme isn’t in the major relative key of the main minor tonality, which is B-flat minor. So instead of being in D-flat major, this second theme is built in F major... I’ve just forgotten that habit this famous morning… Whoopsy ! ^^’
I like this kind of ideas which pop out of your mind, seemingly by themselves.
The first hours of the day are the better to review the work of the eve. Your mind is refreshed, while the work you did have been processed in your mind during your sleep. This is the best moment to really see or hear what you did the day before. It works for any mind activity.
I’ve finished this piece months ago, and I’m currently working on composing the first movement – and last one to be composed – which I will present in the few last entries of this Concerto Diary, to be published in the weeks to come.
Please let me know what you thought about this piece !!
