Concern rises over AI in adult entertainment

Later this month, Berlin will witness the opening of the world's first cyber brothel, where people can book an hour with an AI sex doll. This innovative concept is being rolled out by Cybrothel, following a successful test phase. The dolls are designed for both verbal and physical interaction, tapping into a growing demand for AI in the adult entertainment sector.

“Many people feel more comfortable sharing private matters with a machine because it doesn’t judge,” says Philipp Fussenegger, founder and owner of Cybrothel. This service evolution marks a significant step from previous models where users could only hear a voice actress while interacting with a doll.

This development is part of a broader trend of generative AI applications within the adult entertainment industry. According to SplitMetrics, AI companion apps have seen a surge, reaching 225 million downloads in the Google Play Store. Thomas Kriebernegg, SplitMetrics general manager, expects more app developers to capitalize on this trend, pushing for further innovation and monetization.

Misha Rykov, a privacy researcher with Mozilla’s Privacy Not Included guide, highlights the lucrative nature of AI companions. Given that most chatbots charge fees and rely on technology developed by major players like OpenAI, this sector is seeing high margins. However, Rykov raises concerns about the extensive collection and sharing of personal data with advertisers.

The integration of AI in the adult industry also brings ethical and social challenges. Dr. Kerry McInerney from the University of Cambridge points out the risk of embedding gender stereotypes into AI, potentially promoting harmful ideas about sex and pleasure. She stresses the importance of understanding the data sets used to train these chatbots to avoid perpetuating demeaning or exclusive views on sex.

Addiction is another significant concern. Rykov notes that AI chatbots, particularly those targeting lonely individuals, possess high addictive potential. Mozilla’s reviews have uncovered themes of abuse and violence in some chatbots, leading to content warnings for users. Additionally, the vast amount of personal data collected by these apps often cannot be deleted, raising severe privacy issues.

Real-world relationships may also be affected. Tamara Hoyton from Relate warns that AI porn could set unrealistic expectations, leading to disappointment in actual encounters. While fantasy can be harmless, issues arise when AI experiences foster entitlement or unrealistic assumptions about consent.

Despite these concerns, proponents believe AI can play a positive role. Philipp Hamburger from Lovehoney emphasizes that their aim is to enhance rather than replace human sexual experiences. Similarly, Ruben Cruz from The Clueless Agency argues that AI can mitigate ethical issues by reducing the need for real people to be sexualized in explicit content.

The intersection of AI and adult entertainment is fraught with both opportunities and challenges. As the industry evolves, balancing innovation with ethical considerations will be crucial to ensure that advancements benefit users without compromising their privacy, mental health, or societal norms.
