Conceal Carry for African Americans in 2020

African Americans and Concealed Carry in 2020

I speak to a lot of African American gun owners about firearms topics: home defense, best holsters, industry conventions, Glock vs. Sig, competitive shooting, red flag laws, and lots of other topics. One of the hottest issues is "concealed carry," which means legally having a weapon on one's person. I firmly believe it is an option all African Americans gun owners should explore in 2020. My perspective has changed over time. Five years ago, I felt African American gun owners should exercise concealed carry only in particular situations. I had concerns that it would become more problematic for us. Today, I believe that we all need to conceal carry. Society is in an uproar from the disenfranchised impact of Covid-19, social injustices, domestic terrorism, and the rise of home invasions. In my opinion, the shift is about "SELF PRESERVATION." We need to be prepared to legally defend ourselves not only in our homes but also in public. We can no longer make assumptions about our safety when going to work, shopping, walking, or peacefully jogging. We are most vulnerable in public places and have no way of knowing who is targeting us and why. Therefore, I'm now a strong proponent of a firearm being with you at "all times." Concealed carry provides an extra level of protection against any aggressor or threat. Carrying a gun in this manner doesn't guarantee that you will prevail, but at least have some semblance of a chance to leave unscathed. As a betting man, I will take those odds instead of praying for mercy at an attacker's hand.

Preparation is a state of mind that requires us all to view the world in realistic terms and to adjust accordingly. As young folks say, "If you stay ready, you don't have to get ready." Continuing to put ourselves in harm's way without protection only perpetuates the legacy of victimization. It is time to change the narrative. Let us become the most 2nd Amendment minded community within the USA and conceal carry at all times.

Great commentary Phil, it’s right on target and clearly states the aspirations of NAAGA Members. Please continue to speak out on our behalf while expressing the need for African Americans to exercise our 2nd Amendment Rights. Be safe Brother.
