Computing the retinal afterimage

Computing the retinal afterimage

Can you hack the human visual system to show information purely and specifically in a visual illusion?

Experience your own answer to this in the short video below.

A more complete version of both the question and its answer, however, involves combining discrete mathematics, computer science, art history, visual perception, and experimentation.

The final stages of the latter were completed during the spring of 2022, at the Honours Academy of Universiteit Leiden.

For the results, have a look inside my and my co-author prof.dr. Gerrit van der Veer's article Computational techniques enabling the perception of virtual images exclusive to the retinal afterimage , which includes a software toolkit and is published in the special issue on Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and Human-Computer Interaction of the international journal on Big Data and Cognitive Computing.
