Computer Science is absolutely everything - Maye Edwin
Well, let’s begin with some little history. The 19TH Century was about the industry revolution, about electricity and about disrupting the agricultural society and making it more advanced.
The 20th century was about physics and engineering. How to do most things easier in our everyday life and a lot was built; from refrigerators to washing machines.
The 21ST Century is the digital age. It is the Internet. It is our age.
It is part of our lives...
Today in everything you do there is a programmed device which also means an instructed device. There are a lot of instructions that people have put on all these small devices you interact with every day.
From the alarm clock to starting your car engine and getting to work. Every one of these devices has been programmed. That is Computer Science.
Let us say you want direction on your phone or you are dialling a phone number, you are replying to text inboxes, that way you are actually interacting with a computer to solve a problem at hand. That is programming and Computer Science right there every day in your hand.
Computer Science is one of the best fields through which you can have impact in the world. There are no other fields you can simply touch lives of millions of people with a simple app or software product like Computer Science.
What is Computer Science?
And what is it anyway? It’s simple. Computer Science is the art of telling the computer what to do. That is it. It is CODE. And CODE is just a bunch of letters and symbols that a computer understands. There is no better definition than that.
Creating solutions..
To create products for the people through technology, we need to be the people and so, the need for everyone to have even a little of those skills that Computer Science entails. Being able to program a computer.
What matters with Computer Science and technology as a whole is your curiosity and your daily approach to it. It is about your talent and being creative as a human being.
There is no greater opportunity than changing the world through technology. Computer Science is the bedding rock for that. Today technology affects every field in our lives, manufacturing, education, trade, health, agriculture, transport and many more. It is not about devices anymore. Not about computers anymore.
How I got here...
I am one of those kids some years back when growing up, never had access to a computer or even had to see it around me. When I enrolled for Computer Science at the university and came across these books with introduction to “Basic Programming” titles at the university library, I would really get bored. Very bored.
You know, I wanted to be an Electrical Engineer so Computer Science as a course, was still syncing during my first weeks at the university
These books usually have “hello-world” examples and more of introduction to computer programming. So I decided to write this on my computer one day and could see it print on screen “hello world.” I could try new words, like “Hello Maye, this is your first code”. It would still print out on screen. I got super charged.
That is how I started and even ended up presenting my first project in a Technology Contest at the university with barely a month as a Computer Science student. That was interesting. I say!

So, start now. Computer Science is for everyone. And if you want to touch and change lives of millions of people, Computer Science is what you should study NOW.

6 年I really do not understand why people have a perception that computer science and coding are the same thing. I think computer science is much more than understanding the code and doing what is said in the code. Coding can be regarded as perhaps only a part of computer science, and yes it requires real talent. I had a classmate while I was in my freshman year. All his lessons were so bad and no one would even look at his face. He was always seen as a "dead duck" by both his classmates and lecturers. When we went into programming lessons, I remember that my friend got approximately full marks from all the programming exams. He was the most talented person in the class for me.

6 年In my opinion, Computer Science is a combination of logistics and creativity. When you start out, you learn all of the rules, fundamentals and concepts that give CS it's foundation. Once you learn them, you use these concepts to help you craft a solution to the issue at hand. I was taught many years ago that there are hundreds of ways to solve an issue in CS. It is up to you to find a way to fix the issue at hand. There will never be a finite way to get the job done, but there are ways you may prefer that others wouldn't. That is why I find Computer Science to be important and forever relevant. It will always change and expand, it's up to us to move with the changes and stay ahead of the changes.
