Computer center has calculated with RETROFITBLUE and won

Everyone knows that computers need reliable and excellent cooling. But what does an entire data centre need? After all, data centres work around the clock and produce a corresponding amount of heat. But even for data centres, time does not stand still. The constantly growing computer capacities are taking their toll.

Therefore, a data centre in Frankfurt decided to act and to modernize its air technology, which had been pushed to its limits until then. ZIEHL-ABEGG was awarded the contract for this demanding task. With his modernization program RETROFITBLUE, designed exactly for these needs, the exchange of fans could be carried out – with hardly any impairments to the running operation. After corresponding planning by the ZIEHL-ABEGG engineers, the 64 previously installed, uncontrolled axial fans with alternating current technology were replaced by new, highly efficient ZAplus units with ECblue motor technology. A mammoth task in every respect, but one that the RETROFITBLUE team at ZIEHL-ABEGG solved reliably and to the particular satisfaction of its client. Today, the RETROFITBLUE measure is a profitable result for the data centre. The new fans now require 128,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) less electricity annually, which means a cost saving of more than 19,000 euros*, so the total investment of around 56,000 euros is already balanced for the operator after three years. But the new fans from ZIEHL-ABEGG not only score well in terms of performance, efficiency and economy – the ZAplus units cannot be beaten in terms of noise levels either. Due to the bionic blade design of the FE2owlet the units are much quieter than the old fans. Also, the environmental balance is unbeatable, with an annual CO2 saving of nearly 72 t CO2. The new premium efficiency products provide an hourly air volume flow of 16,000 m3, whereby demand-oriented volume flow control is possible at any time. Due to the building components, which were well planned in advance and precisely matched to the fans, the construction work ran smoothly and the impairment of the ongoing operation during the old-versus-new replacement of the equipment remained minimal. It remains to be noted that: In the end, the data centre was the winner.*(at 0.15 € per kWh)
