compressor start up

compressor start up

To start a compressor safely and efficiently, the following steps should be taken:

  1. Purge the compressor loop with nitrogen: Before starting the compressor, purge the loop with nitrogen to reduce the oxygen content and prevent any potential hazards.
  2. Open compressor casing drains: Open the drains on the compressor casing to drain any condensate that may have accumulated.
  3. Line up separation gas: Ensure that the separation gas, typically nitrogen, is properly lined up to prevent contamination of the compressor.
  4. Start lube oil pump: Start the lube oil pump and verify that there is proper circulation of lubricating oil throughout the compressor system. This step ensures proper lubrication of the compressor internals.
  5. Line up primary and secondary seal gas: Line up the primary and secondary seal gas systems and ensure proper venting to create a suitable seal for the compressor shaft. This helps prevent leakage of gas.
  6. Open compressor suction and discharge valves: Open the suction and discharge valves of the compressor, allowing the flow of gas through the system. Also, open the spill-back valves if present in the system.
  7. Line up intercoolers and after cooler: If the compressor has intercoolers or an aftercooler, ensure they are properly lined up to optimize the cooling and efficiency of the compressed gas.
  8. Check compressor start permissives: Verify that all the start permissives, such as pressure, temperature, and other safety parameters, are within the correct operating range before starting the compressor.
  9. Start compressor and load slowly: Start the compressor according to the manufacturer's recommended procedure. Gradually increase the load on the compressor by slowly closing the anti-surge valve. This helps prevent compressor surge, which can cause damage to the equipment.

It is important to note that these steps provide a general guideline, and the specific startup procedure may vary depending on the type and model of the compressor. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions and any applicable safety guidelines or procedures provided by your organization.
