Compressor Care: Critical parts and Upgrades

The reciprocating compressor—known for its reliability. But like any long-term relationship, overlooking its needs can lead to gradual troubles that turn into a major headache.

Over the years, small gradual changes in how it operates often slip and unnoticed under the radar. Wear and tear on crucial components are sometimes ignored to save money, causing trouble down the road. Fast forward a decade, and what used to be a dependable asset becomes a nightmare for everyone involved.

New teams take over without knowing its history, seeing it as a ‘troublemaker’ from day one. The main parts to be blamed are Cylinder valves, piston guide rings, and pressure packing. When these parts fail, the compressor unexpectedly shutdowns, possibly damaging the compressor's vital parts.

Statistics don't lie: In hydrogen compressors, valves cause about 50% of the problems, followed by rings and pressure packing. In some challenging applications, they can cause up to 70% of unplanned shutdowns. Understanding why these issues happen is really important.

Upgrading the wear parts to the latest state-of-art technology can boost the machine availability with at least 50% better. But this upgrade isn't overnight fix; it requires a long-term plan to happen.

But just changing parts isn’t enough. Shifting maintenance philosophy from reactive to proactive is crucial. This means training the people who operates and maintain the equipment, so they can make smart decisions about how long it’ll work and how much it’ll cost.

Balancing the commercial needs with the machine productivity is key. Knowing equipment history, correct maintenance philosophy and upgrading the wear parts are the secret factors to transform the machine availability and productivity.

In the next posts, I’ll be deeper into the factors affecting each wear part and explore together the reliable solutions.
