The Swedish government has announced the largest civilian support package to date for Ukraine, with a significant focus on addressing the most urgent necessities gripping the country amidst ongoing conflict. Mr. Benjamin Dousa, Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade, stated, "We must strengthen Ukraine’s resilience in every possible way. The Ukrainians are defending both their own freedom and security and ours. This is why today we’re announcing Sweden’s largest civilian support package to date."
The new financial aid aims to meet critical needs such as energy supply, housing, medical care, mine clearance, ensuring safe schooling for children, vocational training for women, and support for war veterans. In total, the package commits SEK 1.414 billion in 2025 from the development assistance budget of Sweden, marking a significant increase in the nation's total support to Ukraine to an estimated SEK 7.8 billion for the year.
Jakob Forssmed, Minister for Social Affairs and Public Health, emphasized the crucial role of civil society, notably during times of war and crisis. An additional SEK 100 million will be directed towards the Ukrainian Red Cross to support their indispensable work on the ground.
Joar Forssell, the foreign policy spokesperson for the Liberal Party, and Aron Emilsson of the Sweden Democrats both underscored the importance of Sweden's support extending beyond military assistance to ensure broad and robust support for Ukraine is vital for the security of both Sweden and Europe.
