The Comprehensive Role of a Health Coach

The Comprehensive Role of a Health Coach

What Does Health Mean to You?

When you think of health, what comes to mind? Many people envision diet and exercise, but true health is much broader. It encompasses physical, mental, and emotional dimensions, each interlinked and equally vital. Health coaching can even be the next step to bring a balanced workplace, making it widely applicable in business settings.

  • Physical Health: This is often the most recognized aspect, involving nutrition, exercise, sleep, and overall body function. It’s about maintaining a balanced diet, staying active, getting adequate rest, and monitoring vital signs and overall body wellness.
  • Mental Health: This dimension focuses on cognitive functions, including clarity of thought, learning, and memory. Mental health also covers stress management, resilience, and maintaining a positive mindset, enabling us to handle life's challenges effectively.
  • Emotional Health: Emotional well-being involves understanding and managing our feelings, fostering healthy relationships, and having a supportive social network. It’s about being aware of and expressing emotions appropriately, coping with life's ups and downs, and cultivating a sense of purpose and satisfaction.

Often when I indulge in conversations about health coaching, I come across misconceptions that narrow the perception of health coaching to just nutrition and exercise. The reality is that health coaching addresses the whole person, encompassing physical, mental, and emotional health.

According to the #NBHWC, health coaches are professionals who empower clients to achieve their health goals through a client-centered, holistic, and evidence-based approach. Coach holistically means helping people to make lifestyle and behavioral changes (quoted from Cathleen Beerkens ). Health coaches serve as accountability partners, helping clients make sustainable lifestyle changes that align with their values and health goals. Furthermore, health coaches often work collaboratively with licensed healthcare providers to ensure a holistic and integrated approach to health.

Health coaching covers various aspects of well-being, including stress management, work-life balance, and emotional health. By addressing these areas, health coaches help clients navigate their personal health journeys, providing support and resources to foster long-term, positive changes.

Why Health Coaching Is More Than Just Diet and Exercise

People often think of health coaching as something limited to advising on healthy eating or fitness routines. In reality, it's a multifaceted profession focused on overall well-being.

  1. Holistic Approach: Health coaches address the interconnectedness of physical, mental, and emotional health. They recognize that improving one area often positively impacts the others, fostering a balanced and holistic state of well-being.
  2. Client-Centered: Health coaching is about empowering clients to make self-directed, lasting changes. It's not about dictating what to do but facilitating the client’s own journey towards better health.
  3. Collaboration with Healthcare Professionals: Health coaches often work alongside doctors, dietitians, and other healthcare providers to ensure clients receive comprehensive care. They help clients implement the advice and treatment plans prescribed by their healthcare providers.
  4. Supportive Partnership: Health coaches act as accountability partners, providing motivation, support, and practical strategies to help clients overcome barriers and achieve their health goals.

In Practice

Here are some examples of how health coaching can make a difference:

  1. #Stress Management: Someone is struggling with chronic stress and they might work with a health coach to develop personalized relaxation techniques, such as mindfulness practices or structured downtime, to better manage their stress levels.
  2. #Work-Life Balance: A busy professional may seek help in establishing boundaries between work and personal life, setting realistic goals, and creating a schedule that allows for both productivity and relaxation.
  3. #Chronic Diseases: An individual with diabetes might receive support in creating a balanced diet plan, developing an exercise routine, and maintaining consistent medication adherence, all tailored to their lifestyle and preferences.
  4. Regaining Clarity in Career: A client feeling lost in their career might work with a coach to identify their core values, explore new career paths, and develop a strategic plan to achieve their professional goals.

This comprehensive support system helps individuals make meaningful changes that contribute to long-term health and well-being. By broadening the understanding of health coaching, we can appreciate its vital role in fostering holistic health and supporting individuals in their unique health journeys.

From my experience majority address health only when they see something aesthetically (weight gain) or they have a health event/diagnosis. The marvel of the human body is its adaptable. The problem with the human body is its adaptable, mean you could engage in poor health behaviours for years and not notice an effect, until you find out you've got heart disease & type 2 diabetes. Whats required is a reframe of what health is.
