What is Sensory Processing Disorder?

Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) is characterized by the brain's abnormal response to sensory stimuli, resulting in either hypersensitivity (overreacting) or hyposensitivity (underreacting and seeking intense stimuli). SPD manifests differently in children and adults (Goodman, 2023). For instance, children with hypersensitivity may find certain clothing textures intolerable, leading to emotional meltdowns, while adults might struggle with overwhelming noise in crowded environments, causing social withdrawal (Pedersen, 2024).

However, whereas ASD encompasses difficulties in social interaction, restricted behaviors, and sensory challenges, SPD exclusively addresses sensory processing issues without inherently affecting cognitive abilities or social communication (NeuroLaunch Editorial Team, 2024).
