For the last 22 years, I have been fascinated with how to effectively read people. I have studied ways to know when a person is telling a lie (works incredibly well), how to know what the underlying beliefs of a person are, how to engage with them, and how to know what the person is looking for. Through all of this study, there are several components that have the greatest impact on how you should interact with that person. The following are the most critical areas to learn in order to be successful in your business dealings.
- Facial Structure - A person's facial structure, also known as physiognomy, will tell you the vast majority of what you need to know about them in order to engage them effectively. You can learn their propensity towards ethical standards, their level of self-absorption, their approach to relationships, and even their language patterns. By knowing these things, and more, you are able to effectively adapt yourself to the person that you are with at the time. You learn to adapt your presentation to their decision making style, their goal versus people orientation, and their model for processing language. I have only met a few other people who have taken the time to master this strategy, but those who have can connect instantly wth anyone.
- Body Language - 93% of all communication is non-verbal. Therefore, the master of reading and projecting the right non-verbals is critically important. Beyond reading what is buried in their psyche and displayed on their face, it is important to watch their primary mannerisms. The posture in which a person sits or stands, the way that they carry themselves, their facial expressions, and even their eye movements will tell you what they are really thinking. Many people think that they are hiding their emotions, but with a little training, those emotions are easily brought to the surface. Once you master this component, you will likely get fewer invitations to play poker, because won't lose much any more.
- Micro-expressions - Micro-expressions are those incredibly subtle expressions that the vast majority of people miss in their conversations and interactions with others. By learning what the "tells" are that each person has, you have an incredible ability to call them out and uncover the truth. The reading and projecting of micro-expressions helps you to know what is true and what is a lie, even though the person often doesn't have a conscious grasp on the truth themselves. Specific eye movement can help you uncover memories versus created answers. Slight involuntary winces or twitches will tell you when a person disagrees with what you said, or with what they have said. The lean of the person and the direction of their feet will tell you where their focus is and what they are engaged or disengaged with.
Reading people is a science. It is a skill-set that can be taught and can be learned. It is model of interaction that enhances relationships, improves connections, and builds a foundation for success in leadership, sales, service, and every other aspect of relationships. If you are interested in your team learning to read people like a book, and do so in the first 10 seconds of interaction, get in touch with me. I work with organizations from the Fortune 50 to small businesses to help them gain an advantage build their success.
