Components of centrifugal pump
Mechanical World
Scope of the page is to learn about industry and industry equipments
A centrifugal pump is a mechanical device that converts mechanical energy into hydraulic energy by using centrifugal force to move fluid. It consists of the following key components:
1. Impeller:
- The rotating component that imparts kinetic energy to the fluid. It is usually made of metal or plastic and has vanes that guide the fluid.
2. Casing:
- The housing that surrounds the impeller. It is designed to direct the fluid towards the discharge outlet and convert velocity into pressure. There are two types of casings:
- Volute casing: Spiral-shaped to slow down the flow and increase pressure.
- Diffuser casing: Contains stationary vanes that help in pressure conversion.
3. Suction and Discharge Nozzles:
- Suction nozzle: Allows fluid to enter the pump and directs it to the impeller.
- Discharge nozzle: Channels the pressurized fluid out of the pump.
4. Shaft:
- A metal rod that connects the impeller to the motor. It transmits the mechanical energy from the motor to the impeller.

5. Seal or Gland:
- Prevents leakage of the fluid along the shaft. There are different types, such as mechanical seals or stuffing boxes.
6. Bearing Assembly:
- Supports the pump shaft and ensures smooth rotation by reducing friction.
7. Wear Rings:
- These are replaceable rings that reduce leakage between the impeller and casing, improving efficiency and preventing excessive wear.
8. Motor:
- Drives the pump by providing the necessary rotational energy to turn the impeller. It can be electric, hydraulic, or powered by an internal combustion engine.
9. Volute/Diffuser:
- Volute: A spiral chamber that collects the fluid from the impeller and converts velocity energy to pressure energy.
- Diffuser: A set of stationary vanes around the impeller that directs the fluid flow and also assists in pressure recovery.
