The FCPA enforcement actions have shown that complexity in business organizations can defeat compliance programs. This can be due to corrupt employees hiding money for bribes or improper payment slips. Compliance professionals must understand that a package of resilience, adaptability, coordination, and inimitability is more attractive than efficiency, understandability, manageability, and predictability. The key is to harness complexity on a sustainable basis.
