Compliance and Community

Compliance and Community

Welcome back to the Compliance Corner?? newsletter. And if we haven’t met yet, thank you for joining me! You can learn a little more about me and my work here, and by watching this short video.

As promised, I won’t top-off anyone’s inbox ?? more than once a month (and it’s been a while since my last newsletter in March, so looking forward to catching up) and we do have some fun and engaging news in this edition ???

Compliance and Community

That’s the theme of this newsletter, and it was such a pleasure to join Dr. Bettina Palazzo for a conversation about building a LinkedIn community. It was so much fun, and thank you to some (but not all) of the attendees for their thoughtful questions and participation, including Mary Jo Climie , Jonas Gebauer , Christoph Kowalewski , Cecilia Garcia Podoley , Silvija Vig, PhD - CCEP-I , Sagar Dutta , Gill Dixon , Umut Turan, CCEP-I , Giuseppe Deleonardis , Chantal Verkooy , Jose Antonio Gordillo Martorell , Maximilien Roche , Sabrine M. LL.M., CCEP-I, ICC , Christian Bugl , Alexandra Hespeler , Iveta Wentink, M.S.L. , María Josefina Orozco , Dr. Anja Seele ,? Lisa-Maria Mair , Rodrigo Sette , and Viviane Silva , among so many others.?

A few take-aways:

LinkedIn is a great place for compliance leaders “around the globe to influence, learn, ask and share about professional best-practices and challenges.”

“A social media handshake (like we are doing right here) is worth more than a thousand likes ????”

“LinkedIn can also be fun ??” As well it should be!

Thanks for offering the counsel of Dorie Clark about giving a one year pause ??? before any “ask” when “connecting with people at conferences.”

Bettina and I are thinking about running another session soon, so feel free to stay tuned ?? And maybe the most memorable comment of all was the thanks from an attendee for “creating a new LinkedIn community and thread” via the session.?And feel free to connect with Bettina and her Cappuccino Club ?? here.

Joining Compliance Communities from South to North ???

It was such an honor to be a part of the Jamaica Accountability Meter Portal (JAMP) Business Integrity Conference in Kingston ???? where I had the pleasure of engaging in a ‘fireside chat’ with Douglas Orane on “Creating Value through Good Governance.” Our discussion was followed by table breakouts, with a wonderful group of young entrepreneurs on how we can enhance business integrity. There were so many great summaries from the table discussions, where each ‘table leader’ presented the group ‘best practices,’ all centering on “why good governance matters.” A few take-aways from those discussions included:?

???? Improving public awareness of tools that already exist on transparency, like the JAMP tool here.?

???? With Jamaica's rich heritage of music ??, musicians,? who are social media influencers,? can better and more proactively promote how doing ‘what’s right’ is not only good for society, but also? to make it cool ?? !! Someone called it “glamorizing the goodness” of ethics ??

???? The importance of simplifying procurement to make it more available, transparent, and to open the way for young people and start-ups to participate in public procurement. This is certainly a global ?? issue and challenge.

???? The importance of making good governance and transparency easy and a “way of life,” by having a culture of open and honest conversations, making ethics “a human issue, not only a legal one.”?

I’d like to thank Jeanette Calder for all her support in bringing me to Jamaica, and to all of the hosts, leaders and organizers, including Howard Mitchell, Nadiya Figueroa, Selvin Hay, Andrae Tulloch,?Camille (Marr) Facey among so many others.

And speaking of music, with thanks to Douglas for his play-list, I started listening to some of the ‘roots’ of Jamaican music, specially reggae, including Augustus Pablo, so if you like reggae, check this out here for starters ??.?

What an honor and pleasure to exchange perspectives with Douglas Orane and to share a moment with all the event leaders!

From Jamaica it was onto ?? Amsterdam ???? for the Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics (SCCE) ECEI with thanks to Gerry Zack , Adam Turteltaub CCEP, CHC and their team, for putting together such an engaging three days.

There were so many resonating panels starting with the session on "New Challenges & Opportunities for C & E Professionals" with Isabel Barberá , John Bowman , Dr. Kurt Michels & Susan du Becker .

Ty Francis MBE, CCEP moderated a great session on "How Meta Got Engineers Excited about Compliance Training…and How You Can Too" with Guillem Casòliva Cabana, PhD, CCEP-I, Public Speaker , Helene Kadjar & Samer Jannoun, CCEP-I, FICA . What I enjoyed most about this session is how you can create “FOMO” around compliance training!?

"Using Technology to Enhance Decision-Making" was fantastic with Jannica Houben & Travis Waugh .

And special thanks to Anna Romberg & Benjamin van Rooij for sharing their perspectives during our panel "What Happens When The Gray Zone ?? Meets the Behavioral Code ???"

But as we can't be in more than one place at once,? I heard "You should have been at the. . . panel" quite often ?? A few of those panels included Tal M. Freilich, CCEP-I , Jad Mhanna , Ellen M. Hunt , Laurence Houlbert , Nadège ROCHEL , Kristy Grant-Hart , Jonathan Armstrong , Mary Shirley , Brett Hudson , Yvonne Hilst , Michelle Fisser & Silvija Vig, PhD - CCEP-I among so many others.

But it's not always what happens in the conference hall that is memorable, where I enjoyed a morning run with Dr. Tobias Kruis, LL.M., CCEP-I & even after departing the conference I ran into Umut Turan, CCEP-I & Ursula Schmidt .

Finally, thanks to the LRN team of Ty Francis MBE, CCEP & Amy Hanan for cohosting a lovely dinner, where we were joined by so many friends including Astrid Amelink , Diane ?ivkovi? , Hanne Bay , Karen Nightingale , Susan du Becker , Frederikke B?gh Thomsen , Ian Moolman MBA, CCEP-I, FICA, CFE, et al. , and? Paul H Zietsman among so many other colleagues ???

I can’t possibly tag everyone in this photo collage, but I think the smiles say it all!

From Amsterdam it was onto Munich ???? to take part in a series of LRN ’s Global ?? Masterclasses on “Shaping effective Ethics & Compliance programmes - Learning from local best practices.” Here’s a collage of photos where the LRN 2024 Ethics and Compliance Program Effectiveness Report summary was presented by LRN’s Chief Marketing Officer, Amy Hanan , and?which can be found here.??

We were then joined by Gernot T?lle , Head of Legal & Compliance, VITA34 AG , Rolf Hünermann , Partner McDermott Will & Emery , Thomas Fritzsche , Partner, 德勤 , and moderator Tim Tyler , Vice President, International Compliance Association . It was a wonderful and engaging afternoon, with thanks to McDermott Will & Emery for hosting us, and to Stephan Lutz CAMS, CFE, for all the selfies ?? ??

A wonderful day and dinner in Munich!

A wonderful day and dinner in Munich!

My first article in HBR!?

On the theme of “community”, I have a wonderful group of writing coaches and mentors, starting with Dorie Clark , and including Ron Carucci , David Lancefield , Dina Denham Smith , Rebecca Zucker , and Amii Barnard-Bahn, JD, PCC among many others. So, with thanks again to Caroline Stokes, CEC for the opportunity to collaborate, it was so exciting to see this first Harvard Business Review piece come to life here. Special thanks to Keith Packer for providing his insights and to Cecilia Müller Torbrand for her contribution. And we even held the first page of the HBR website for a day (article image ? HBR) ??

My first (but hopefully not my last) piece in the Harvard Business Review

And back to the “community,”? theme, it was originally Andrew McBride who introduced me to Keith Packer, and while Andrew and I met via LinkedIn as well as serving on the Advisory Board of Compliance Week , it was finally a pleasure to meet him in-real-life in Chicago. We had so much to catch-up on, including debating the E&C implications of an Octopus ??. I think we settled on how the arms are there to “hug” ?? and not to devour, even if they are quite predatory and “have camera-like eyes.”? But as shared in Wikipedia “Octopuses are highly intelligent” so there you go! Any creative thoughts on the E&C connection with octopuses are most welcome in the comments!!??Oh, and one more point that Andrew shared, “careful how much ink you use in your policies ??.”

Andy and I pondering the E&C connection with Octopuses among other topics during our first IRL get-together!?

By the time this newsletter is published, I will be wheels-up ?? heading to London ???? for a week, and plan to join LRN and the International Compliance Association at a Masterclass on “How to Shape Effective Ethics & Compliance Programs”? on May 15 at 13:00. If you would like to join us feel free to register here and we hope to see you there?? Panelists include Ty Francis MBE, CCEP ,? Simon Airey, Karen Nightingale and Luciane M. .

Back to the Nordics ???? ???? ????

It’s always fun to return to the Nordics and on June 6th, I will join Anna Romberg in Helsinki? at Boardman Oy with thanks to Heli Koukkula-Teixeira for her support,? for a Session (9:00-12:00) titled? "Corruption and the Risk of Corruption on the Board’s Agenda” More information on the full program can be found here.?

Rumor has it that we will be treated to a Finnish sunset ?? while we are there. And we will also be organizing a dinner on the 6th, with the Forensic Risk Alliance & Ropes & Gray LLP (always great food and conversation), including Amanda Raad , Sean Seelinger , and Derek Patterson . If you would like? to join us for dinner ??? on June 6th, email me at [email protected] (availability is quite limited).

And a special shout out to Salla Tuominen - as it’s always great to catch-up with her when in Helsinki.? ????

Also for our Finnish ???? friends, if you can join us for Breakfast ?? on June 7th, in Helsinki, 8.30-10.30 EEST at Scandic Annankatu, feel free to register here. I think by the time I get home from Helinski it will be time for lots of running ????

And last, but VERY NOT least, I’m looking forward to an EthicsTalkLive ?? with? Anna Romberg , Niina Ratsula and Alison Taylor ???? ????? on June 7th. It will be livestreamed from Helsinki at 13.00-14.00 EEST. If you would like to join us and the Nordic Business Ethics Initiative feel free to register here ???

During this session we will explore what it looks like to do the right thing in an era of increased stakeholder expectations, tightening regulations and intensifying enforcement? And how can we develop as ethics and compliance professionals along with business leaders to survive and thrive in a turbulent world? If you would like to prepare in advance, I highly recommend reading Alison’s book ?? Higher Ground: How Business Can Do The Right Thing in a Turbulent World which can be purchased here.?

From Finland it’s over to Copenhagen ????, where I will also be presenting at a cross-industry group of Compliance Professionals on June 11th.? With thanks to Martin L?nstrup (a fellow runner ??), Hanne Bay , Charlotte Willer and Joseph Simon for their support. For more information feel free to email me at [email protected]. And speaking of Martin, it was so much fun to join him and his team for a virtual “FIKA” ? as part of a series of E&C events at Coloplast . And if anyone knows how to take a great selfie, it’s Martin ??

Great working with Martin and his team at Coloplast!?

From Denmark, it is over to Norway ???? and? a discussion with Helge Kvamme at the Oslo Anti-Corruption Conference on June 13th and 14th, titled “A Fireside Chat on a Unique Journey from Corruption to Compliance”. I hope my Norwegian ???? friends and colleagues can join us, and the registration link can be found here. As a side-note, this conference was one of the first times I ever shared my story, going back to 2015. I presented virtually (before that was a “thing”) back then,? as I did not yet have my travel rights ?? restored. So, it will be a true honor and pleasure to join everyone live in Oslo!

And in the genre of late-breaking news ??, I am thrilled to share that I will be speaking at the International Anti-Corruption Conference (IACC), the world’s largest independent global forum in the fight against corruption. The 21st iteration of the IACC will take place from 18 to 21 June in Vilnius, Lithuania ????. Here is the event link and I will be holding a fireside chat as part of the New IACC Masterclass Series, with Cecilia Müller Torbrand . I’m also looking forward to the plenary sessions with Klaus Moosmayer and Alison Taylor ’s along with the other sessions and workshops! !?
