Compliance Career Spotlight: Rob Newson

We caught up with Rob Newson , a Compliance Lead at NOW. He discussed his role, his career highlights so far, and what he's most excited about coming up at NOW ??

1.????Can you tell us more about your role at NOW?

I’m a Compliance Lead in the NOW Resilience team. I support the business across a range of areas with a key focus on Data Protection and Marketing Compliance, helping to ensure that we’re always thinking about doing the right things for our customers. I get involved in many projects, making sure the right checks and processes are in place and often acting as a helping hand when it comes to interpreting and applying guidance given by our legal teams.

2.????What’s your career highlight so far??

I have 2 main highlights. The first is landing the Compliance Lead role which I’ve only been doing since September 2023. It’s really opened up new opportunities for me and has been a big step up from my previous role as a Marketing Compliance Manager with a much broader remit and a higher level of influence. I’m currently building a new team and I can’t wait to see what we can achieve over the next year and beyond. The other highlight was my time as People Champion for the Ops department where I had the opportunity to represent the ideas and opinions of our colleagues in front of leadership, and also helped the department to prepare for the return to hybrid working after Covid lockdowns. I got a NOWbel award for this in Q2 2021, and I still wear the pin on my lanyard today. ?

3.????What's the best thing about your role??

I get to engage with so many different departments and teams, from Marketing to Legal, Tech to Operations and so on, and in doing so, I can give unique viewpoints on the types of issues our customers may face and help to make sure things don’t inadvertently have a negative impact on them. Talking to so many different areas of the business gives you a really broad view of how things work and I enjoy finding clarity in areas of complexity, and having the chance to pick apart the details and translate them into high level actions and recommendations. ?

4.????What do you love about the Sky Campus?

There’s always something interesting going on, and the facilities are great – you’ve got a gym, barbers, cinema, sports shop and plenty of cycling amenities. Most importantly there are loads of great places to eat, and they don’t skimp on vegan choices! ????

5.????Who inspires you??

As cheesy as it sounds, I find the NOW Operations team as a whole inspiring. We have such a diverse range of personalities and skillsets, and a great team culture. I feel like everyone is valued regardless of seniority, and there are so many opportunities to learn from each other and share different perspectives.

6.??What are you most excited about coming up at NOW?

Getting my new team established and broadening our remit to support other European OTT services, such as WOW in Germany. There’s also some great changes and improvements coming to NOW in 2024 which will be revealed in due course, so there’s lots to be excited about!

7.????What’s your favourite Show, Movie or Sport on NOW?

There’s a bit of an HBO theme here. I’m most looking forward to the next seasons of The Last of Us, House of the Dragon and The White Lotus. Poker Face was great recently. Also, as a bit of a guilty pleasure, my wife and I have watched all of The Rookie so far and we’re waiting for the new season of that to come out.
