Psychological Conditioning: A Key to Understanding the Concept of Opposites. The concept and definition of conditioning is to train a person or animal to behave, react, and respond to circumstances and environments in a particular fashion. An animal’s foundational construct comprises two dynamic sectors: physiological and psychological. Psychologically, we become conditioned through our environment, social interactions, cultural and societal norms, and emotional factors. We all experience the same life experiences, but we experience them differently.

Each of us is a unique product of our genetics, health, lifestyle, and environment. These factors, especially our interactions with others, shape our individual conditioning. This means that each of us has a unique perspective on existence, regardless of where our beliefs or perspectives intersect.

Psychological conditioning, contrary to popular belief, is a complex and fascinating process. To illustrate this, I will provide an example that is both simple in nature and profound in its implications.

What Is the Opposite?Of?

If you ask someone, “What is the opposite of black?” The most accurate response is “white.” If you ask someone what the opposite of blue is, the most common response is red.

Now, let’s say you ask someone, “What is the opposite of a Giraffe?” There is no conditioned response or conditioned opposite of a Giraffe. Undoubtedly, much of what we consider opposites is conditioned through correlating factors within our perspective realities.

The societal aspect of ethnicity and race plays a significant role in our perception of opposites. The historical elements of slavery, segregation, and oppression have created a narrative that white is the opposite of black. However, it’s crucial to remember that, in the end, we are all human.

The example of the opposite of blue being red varies among perspectives, but using the example from a societal and environmental aspect, think of the prominent street gangs Bloods and Crips. What symbolizes a blood gang member in the context of aesthetics is that red represents the gang’s primary color. Crips wear the color blue to signify their affiliation with being a crip. Through mass media, the world of crime, and the colors themselves illustrate the two opposing gangs who have influenced their community and culture of gangs in America, which will condition people to believe the theory of red and blue being opposite.

Although the concept of opposites is fundamental, many of the things we think are opposites are truly not opposites, and we tend to conceptualize that things are due to the subtle mental conditioning expressed in a plethora of forms.
