Complexity

I had the chance to listen to M. Laurent Bibard when invited by M. Laurent Leboucher to one of our internal seminars.
The subject of his presentation seemed basic and so easy to practice, but for me, it is a whole mindset change among engineers and technical community.
His concern was about how to bring up the learning curve within a so fast-changing world, a world becoming complex.
In fact, we, the technical engineering experts, assume that we know. This is true from our studies, practice and day to day work. This is our daily job: to know. So we use our competencies to develop instincts and reflexes about complex situations, which we apply in a very logical way.
So far this looks so meaningful. Where is the problem?
Here comes the point...
When you take a look at the disruptive changes around us, Did it come only from reflex? Did it come only from knowledge already built?
M. Laurent Bibard says there is a gap between saying that you are open/flexible and being open/flexible. The whole mindset change lies there. Being open and flexible is when you accept to ask/answer simple questions which may disrupt your reflexes and bring doubt to your knowledge. And there lies the innovation!
"learn to unlearn in the objective to learn again"
When it comes to my role as a manager, M. Laurent Bibard highlighted that Leaders' responsability is to make teams talk to each other, dare ask simple questions about complex subjects, exchange and make teams members feel responsible, whatever is their level of involvement.
In our lab in Tunis, one of our strategic axis is agility and how to empower teams within their projects. It is a daily work towards transformation for creating the environment to ask and answer questions, so that we can get more of new ideas and new forward proposals.
Thank you Laurent Leboucher for choosing such a speaker! It is a simple subject into a complex world which will help us innovate in complexity.
