Complaining is Draining

Complaining is Draining

Are you a Bucket-Filler?

In the dynamic world of healthcare, the emotional and mental well-being of your team can make all the difference. As Joyce Meyers wisely said, “Watch out for the joy stealers: gossip, criticism, complaining, fault finding, and a negative, judgmental attitude.”

While it's crucial for employees to express their concerns, there's a fine line between seeking support and spreading negativity.

While teaching a group of hospital employees about the impact of positivity, a CEO raised a valid concern: how can we ensure our teams feel heard without fostering a culture of constant complaining?

This balance is essential, especially in an environment as challenging as healthcare. The key lies in differentiating between constructive venting and destructive complaining.

Encourage your team to seek support and advice when faced with challenges. These are the employees who, despite difficulties, strive for positive resolutions and contribute to a thriving work environment.

On the other hand, habitual complainers, or "bucket-suckers," drain the morale of those around them, spreading negativity like wildfire.

As leaders, it's your responsibility to coach these individuals and transform their outlook. Focus on four main influences:

  1. Focus: Help them shift their attention from frustrations to potential learnings.
  2. Perception: Guide them to distinguish between true crises and minor setbacks.
  3. Associations: Address the influence of their peer group on their attitude.
  4. Expectations: Encourage realistic and positive expectations about their work.

Your proactive coaching can stop the spread of negativity and reinforce a positive culture. Remember, accepting negativity is akin to endorsing it.

Let’s commit to fostering an environment where positivity thrives and negativity is constructively addressed.

Be well and be a BUCKET FILLER!
