The Competitor Mindset: Winning Strategies for Life
From the Locker Room to the Boardroom: Developing a Competitor Mindset
Every day presents a new challenge. Whether it’s excelling in business, competing in sports, improving your fitness, or leading your family…competition surrounds us. But competition isn’t just about crushing your opponent (the traditional definition)—it’s about challenging yourself to improve daily. Developing a competitor mindset transforms challenges into opportunities for growth, pushing you to become the best version of yourself.
The Foundations of a Competitor Mindset
For most of us…competition is most commonly associated with sports, but it applies equally to life and business. It’s a mindset built on resilience, discipline, and a relentless focus on progress. As legendary coach John Wooden once said, “Success comes from knowing that you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming.”? The best version of you!
A true competitor mindset begins with self-awareness. To compete effectively, you must define your goals and understand your motivations. Are you competing to grow and improve, or are you driven by ego and external validation? I now I spent much of my sports and early business career competing for external reasons.? This is a losing proposition.??
The healthiest form of competition is inwardly focused—a long game dedicated to self-discovery and personal growth.
Take sports as an example. Imagine playing exclusively against weaker opponents. While it may feel good to win (I know I love to win), it won’t make you better. Now imagine competing against stronger opponents. You might lose in the short term, but those matches push you to sharpen your skills and improve. There is no question…you learn more in defeat and challenging times? than you do in victory.??
I have played for a lot of winning teams, but I have played for even more teams that lost.? The lessons I learned (physically and mentally) and the changes I made to improve (mindset, skills, etc) were so valuable.? These are lessons I still use today.
The same principle applies to life. If you only take on projects or roles you’re already comfortable with, you limit your potential. Growth requires discomfort—the willingness to fail, learn, and come back stronger.?
Feeling uncomfortable?? Good.? This is the opportunity to grow.

Healthy vs. Unhealthy Competition
Healthy competition inspires innovation, resilience, and confidence. As my friend, author, and speaker Jake Thompson says…“Beat Yesterday”.? Strive for consistent improvement. emphasizing progress over perfection. On the other hand, unhealthy competition—rooted in insecurity or a need to minimize others—leads to burnout, jealousy, and bad decisions.
Consider the influence of social media…the silent hidden competition in our heads. Constant comparisons to others’ curated successes can make even your greatest achievements feel inadequate. It’s critical to stay focused on YOUR journey and resist the trap of comparison. As Theodore Roosevelt accurately stated, “Comparison is the thief of joy.”
Resilience: The Cornerstone of Competition
Every competitor faces setbacks. What separates winners from the rest is resilience. Resilience isn’t just about bouncing back—it’s about using challenges as stepping stones for growth. Whether it’s pushing through a tough project or training for a race, resilience is built through repeated exposure to adversity.
Building a Competitive Edge
Thriving in any arena requires more than talent. You need the right mindset, habits, and strategies. Here are three foundational steps:
Compete to Inspire
A competitor mindset is about more than personal achievement. It’s about lifting others along the way. When you compete with integrity, discipline, and a commitment to growth, you inspire those around you to raise their game. True competitors understand that competition isn’t a zero-sum game—it’s an opportunity to elevate everyone involved.
As Jake Thompson reminds us, “True competitors don’t just want to win—they want to see others win too.”
Compete, inspire, and encourage. That’s the essence of a competitor mindset—and it’s a mindset that will serve you (and me) in every arena of life.
