Management is a challenge in today’s date, and decision making is an integral part of it. Big organizations indisputably need accurate decision support that is where ‘Controlling’ comes in. But what does the controlling function entail? And how does it affect you? Well, the controlling function is like a compass that helps your company stay on its path of predetermined mission, processes, and roles. A controller’s role is to present reliable Intel to the decision-makers as per agreed objectives.
Given the megatrends like increased complexity, volatility, internationalization, and higher demand for transparency and compliance, controlling functions have modified as well. Overall, the controllers fall into four distinct roles with least to most active roles: Data Analyst, Performance Monitor, Business Partner, and Change Agent.
In a traditional controlling setup internal and external factors along with strategy orientation influence the controlling department, ‘The competitive challenge of controlling’ model is founded on the fact that the work and role of the controlling function are ever-changing. Interestingly, external consultants and corporate development followed by accounting function always compete with the controlling function. We feel an improved model is the one where the ‘value’ added by controlling function surpasses the cost of the actual service.
