Reflection:
Compassion is often thought of as an others-focused act. We show pity. Express concern. Practice empathy. All with the hope of alleviating the suffering of those around us. But if we focus our compassion only on other people then we leave nothing left for us. Like a loop that hasn't been closed, this type of outwardly focused compassion is incomplete. True compassion encompasses all people, ourselves included. That's how we close the loop.
Action:
This week, whenever you find yourself down and out — unhappy about a relationship, anxious about a work project, jealous over a friend — show yourself some compassion like you'd show it to someone else. After all, how can we be there for other people if we aren't there for ourselves?
