A Compass to Successful Decision-Making

A Compass to Successful Decision-Making

Successful people make successful decisions. They do not procrastinate, hesitate or second-guess themselves. They know what they want to do, and they do it. Success for them is simply making the decision. Action automatically follows. However, making successful decisions might seem to be a very hard skill to obtain. Most times, people get stuck in an endless loop of questioning their own decisions and being unsure as to what to do. Sometimes people make wrong decisions that end up hurting both their relationships and reputations.

What then is the key to successful decision-making? What is the secret to ensuring that every decision and action that you take serves your well-being and growth? Well, the answer is simple. To make successful decisions, we need to know what these decisions are meant to serve. We need to know the “Why?” of our actions. Why are we doing the things that we do? We need to know our Purpose. Once we identify the “Why?”, our Purpose, it becomes easy to figure out what decisions we need to make to achieve it. Successful decision-making is based on aligning our actions with our Purpose.

A ship sailing at speed is meaningless if it does not know where it is going. All it does is get to the wrong place faster. A person who strives to make good decisions will fail to do so unless they know their Purpose. A Purpose is a compass that shows you the direction you need to head in. Every time you make a decision, it becomes essential to reflect on whether it aligns with your Purpose. A decision that does not further your Purpose is not the right one.

But firstly, what is your Purpose? Well, each of us has a Unique Purpose in life. Even a business has a Unique Purpose. To understand Purpose, we have to start by pondering a question that everyone is bound to have asked themselves at least once in their lives: “Who am I?”. Who you are can be summed up by knowing what brings you joy in the service of others. Your answer to this question is essentially your unique Purpose in life. However, this answer needs to be strong and compelling. It must be one that, when you release yourself to it, is no longer a choice but rather your destination. When you embrace your Purpose, a little voice inside you says, “This is who I really am. I have to take action on this. I have no alternative.” Your Purpose provides the direction for your decisions.

When you face a potential decision that aligns with your Purpose, it is no longer a question of “Should I?”. Instead, it becomes a case of “I have to”, as actions that align with your Purpose will call out to you. People who consistently make successful decisions can do so because every decision that they make is in line with their Purpose. The first step towards successful-decision making is to identify your Purpose.

Narrowing down your Purpose might seem like a daunting task, but all it requires is some time and reflection. To start on this journey, ask yourself these questions:

  • Whom Do You Serve?Who do you take true joy in serving? This could be teaching people who are eager to learn, providing value to your company’s customers, or even taking care of your family. This service does not feel like a burden. Instead, it energizes you.
  • What Is Most Important To You?What specific personal goals are most important to you? Why are they important now?
  • What Would a Single Sentence That Expresses That Sound Like?It is now time to put together everything you have learned about yourself and comprehensively and concisely express your Purpose. This is your Declaration of Purpose.

Take the time to reflect and truly understand your Purpose. Once you do, successful decision-making simply becomes a matter of taking a few seconds to reflect on whether each decision aligns with your Purpose.

Once you identify your Purpose, you take an essential step toward making successful decisions and being a person of integrity, one who people can depend upon and look up to.

Well said ? Sam Silverstein, CSP, CPAE Good decisions in alignment with one's purpose and one's goals become great decisions. And successful people make successful decisions because they have a command of their mission, purpose, goals and objectives and they're all in alignment. Your beliefs form your behaviors, and your behaviors and incentives imposed on you, guide you in making decisions. And the decisions you make, create your outcomes and determine your results.
