Compass retreat 2019 - developing emotional intelligence
During our second Compass retreat – a program specifically designed to build on the learnings of our Compass - visionary leadership program for women - we took a deep dive into what emotional agility looks like, and how to better to recognise, use, understand and manage the emotions that we see in others, but more importantly, the ones that we recognise in ourselves.
The term ‘emotional intelligence’ is often used when we talk about great leaders but being emotionally switched on means more than just being able to pick up on a colleague’s bad mood.
Once we become aware of the universal cause of the five primary emotions - happiness, anger, sadness, disgust and fear then we can tune into the emotion and identify what our own individual trigger is. Only then can we decide how useful that emotion is to us in the moment. Do we want to become that emotion or just let it pass?
Looking at our reactions from the ‘Inside out’ doesn’t mean blocking the emotion or attempting to keep the negative feelings trapped in tiny boxes on dusty shelves. It's means that we can experience a whole array of emotions (they are what makes us human after-all) but we don’t have to get stuck in them. We hold the power and can choose how to respond. With regular practise, you will start to feel and behave differently.
