The Reality of Applying to College?

The process of applying to college has changed dramatically in recent years. In the past, it was a relatively simple process with a few key steps: take the SAT/ACT, research schools, fill out applications and write essays, submit the applications and wait for results. Nowadays, there are many more steps involved and the process can seem endless. In addition to taking standardized tests and visiting schools, students must now navigate a complex web of financial aid options and choices regarding extracurricular activities, along with completing endless paperwork. All of this while trying to maintain good grades! No wonder so many students feel stressed during this time.

As Beth passionately pointed out in our conversation -- it's important to remember that the college journey is about more than just getting into the school of your dreams. It's also about finding out who you are and what you want to do with your life. This can be an exciting time full of new experiences and opportunities for personal growth. So how can you make sure that you enjoy this journey instead of just enduring it? Here are a few tips:

1) Talk to your parents/guardians about your plans and ask for their input and advice. They may have gone through the college process themselves or know someone who has. Get as much information as you can from them before making any decisions.

2) Research your options thoroughly. There are many resources available to help you find the right school for you. Utilize these resources! Talk to your guidance counselor, visit college websites, attend college fairs/nights. The more information you have, the better equipped you'll be to make a decision.

3) Don't forget about your extracurricular activities! These can be a great way to show colleges what you're really passionate about outside of academics. Get involved in things that interest you and pursue leadership positions when possible. Colleges like well-rounded applicants!

4) Lastly, don't forget to have fun! This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience so make sure to enjoy it! Go on campus visits with your friends, go out to eat in new places, explore the city/town where your school is located. And don't forget to document it all - taking photos and writing down memories will help you cherish this time for years to come.

The college process can be daunting but it doesn't have to be all work and no play! By following these tips and keeping your eye on the prize (a bright future!), you'll be sure to enjoy this journey while still getting into the school of your dreams.?To learn more about the amazing work Beth Probst does at At The Core, visit https://www.gettingatthecore.com/
