Comparison: The Thief of Joy
Let's get real about something that happens to all of us, and I mean all of us. You know that feeling when you're scrolling through social media, catching glimpses of other business owners, peers, entrepreneurs just smashing it? Their businesses are flourishing, teams growing like they're on steroids, sales off the charts, likes and engagement way better than yours...
And you? You're sat there with your lukewarm cuppa, wondering, "What about me?"
I get it. Been there. Here's the thing, we've all had our days in the sun. The highs, the lows, they're all part of the journey. But sometimes, it's like you're stuck in a loop, and the exit seems miles away.
So, what's that shadow lurking in the corner, you ask? Oh, that's comparison, the stealthy thief that's been quietly sucking the joy out of our lives. It's about time we grab our mindful entrepreneurship toolbox and show this uninvited guest the door.
Now, don't get me wrong. A bit of competition is a good thing. It keeps us on our toes, pushing us to grow, innovate, strive for better. But comparison? That's a slippery slope we're better off avoiding.
Theodore Roosevelt had a point when he said, "Comparison is the thief of joy."
It's oh-so-easy to get caught in the trap of comparing your behind-the-scenes chaos to someone else's picture-perfect showreel. But remember, success isn't a race. It's not about who gets there first. It's about the journey, your journey.
We're all walking our own paths, moving at our own pace. Some of us might be sprinting, some might be ambling along, taking in the scenery. None is better than the other. They're just... different.
When that whisper of comparison creeps in, and trust me, it will, just remember: You're not alone in this. It's a universal experience. Take a moment, take a breath, acknowledge it. But then, pivot. Refocus on your goals, your journey. Let comparison be a reminder to keep your eyes on your own path.

How do I do it? Well, I'm glad you asked. When I feel that old tug of comparison, I bring my focus back to what I'm doing. My goals, my progress. It's like my very own north star, guiding me through the murkiness.
And you know what else helps? Gratitude. Taking a moment to appreciate where you are and how far you've come. Celebrate your wins, no matter how small. Each one is a step on your journey.
And let's not forget about the power of community. Reach out, share your thoughts and fears with someone you trust. More often than not, they'll have a story or two of their own to share.
Last but not least, let's change the narrative.
Rather than getting tangled up in comparison, let's cheer for each other's successes. After all, success isn't finite. It's an open field, ripe for everyone willing to roll up their sleeves.
In this journey, we must remember to carry each other. Buddhist teachings emphasise the dangers of comparison, reminding us that it often leads to jealousy and envy, mental states that distract us from peace and contentment. Instead, they advocate for Mudita, or empathetic joy. It's about finding happiness in the success of others, not fostering feelings of envy or inferiority.
So I hope you'll join me in making an effort to focus on our own unique journeys, celebrating each other's victories along the way. After all, we're in this together. We've got this!
Here's to a slower, more mindful way...
