"Comparison is the Thief of Joy"

"Comparison is the Thief of Joy"

Well, here's the way I see it.. We all have a tendency to judge ourselves by comparing our inner struggles to the outer appearances of others. We look at what others have and think, "Why can't I be like them?" But here's the catch: we only see their surface. We don't know what's going on in their lives or how they really feel.

So, when comparing ourselves, it's important to use it as a way to improve, not to tear others down. Look at the good examples around you and ask yourself how you can grow, not how you can compete. Everyone's got their own battles, and it's easy to get caught up in negativity, especially when we're hard on ourselves.?

This all reminds me of the wonderful phrase “Comparison is the thief of joy”. This is another valuable nugget that is also attributed to our good friend President Theodore Roosevelt and various others. It evokes a powerful sentiment that can be life-changing. If we compare ourselves to others, we may be left with feelings of inferiority or superiority—and neither creates an emotionally healthy human being!

I've always had role models I looked up to (Alan Ralston & Grandpa Vic) and I think it's great to aspire to be like them, but it's about finding inspiration, not just feeling inadequate to the ones that we look up to most. Be kind to yourself and recognize that you're a work in progress. We're all just trying to do our best and keep moving forward. I’m still a work in progress, each and every day.?

Over the years, I've learned that the people who help you and the community around you are invaluable. It's not a solo effort; it’s a group effort. I used to think I was on my own, but I've come to realize that everyone who supports me is part of a bigger picture, hence “E pluribus unum”.?

Looking back on my life, now as a newly turned 69-year-old man, I see how much further I’ve come than I ever imagined. When you face challenges and setbacks, remember they're part of the journey. Keep reaching higher and learning from each experience. It's all about growing, supporting one another, and appreciating the community that helps us all thrive.
