Comparison of Micro 4 in 1 and COB

It’s been a long time! From the last article sharing to now, almost one year. Hope you all guys doing well during this period.

2022 is really challenging for me, not only been through hopping to Leyard (World’s Leader LED), but also get the chance of real touch with my dear customers. I harvested my self-improvement, getting more experience and professional in the AV industry. Most importantly, I’m pretty confirm that I love my current job now, I enjoy it! Finding self value realization is always my final objection.

Recently, I got the question from my customer that COB and Micro 4 in 1, which one will be better? For this, I want to share my opinions below.

When is comes to surface mounting technology of LED, what comes to you mind first? Or what is the current mainstream in your subconscious mind? For me, the answer is SMD. Throughout the development of LED SMT, in the past decade years, outdoor is mainly applied DIP, while now SMD also be widely used for outdoor Led screen, including fixed building screen and advertising field. SMD started to be developed about 20 years ago, along with the pixel pitch more and more smaller, SMD is required to getting more and more mature. In my opinion, Micro 4 in 1 is the branch of SMD, and COB emerging due to higher demands for special harsh situation.

As for COB, it has two chip ways, including formal and flip. These two chip kind are different in some way. On the one hand, in chip side, formal chip is wire bonding process, while flip chip is no. Flip chip’s light effect will be better, and light angle will be bigger. One the other hand, in mounting side, flip chip have higher contrast ratio than formal chip.

Now comes to comparison of COB and Micro 4 in 1, compared with Micro 4 in 1, COB’s performance will be more reliable and stable, also heat dissipation and ingress protection is pretty good. That’s why the cost will be higher. Micro 4 in 1 have less light reflection compared with COB, mounting convenience will be better.

In conclusion, if the application scene tend to have potential risk to hit the screen, COB may be a better choice. If the site is tend to be normal indoor using and have high demands for viewing effect at the same time, then Micro 4 in 1 can do maintenance easier and may be more suitable.
