Comparing Bosch Praesensa and Baldwin Boxall Vigil 3

Comparing Bosch Praesensa and Baldwin Boxall Vigil 3

The following analysis explores the distinct approaches of the Bosch Praesensa and Baldwin Boxall Vigil 3, two prominent public address and voice alarm systems.

While both excel in their respective domains, their underlying technologies and architectures set them apart.

Praesensa leverages the flexibility and scalability of IP-based networking, allowing seamless integration with existing IT infrastructures. This system stands out with its intelligent power allocation, maximising efficiency and minimising ownership costs.

In contrast, Vigil 3 adopts a modular and centralised design, relying on a proprietary Power over Ethernet (POE) loop architecture.? This unique approach simplifies cabling and eliminates the need for external Ethernet switches.

The comparison also highlights the contrasting redundancy strategies employed by each system. Praesensa implements features like spare amplifier channels and dual network connections for glitch-free audio switching. Vigil 3, however, focuses on distributing configuration data across its modules, ensuring system resilience even if some modules become isolated.? Understanding these fundamental differences can assist in selecting the system best suited to specific needs and preferences.

Similarities

  • Modular: Makes customisation and expansion simpler.
  • Networked Capability: Both can be configured as centralised (single rack) or decentralised (networked systems).
  • Integration with Fire Alarm Systems: Obvious and impossible to ignore I know.
  • Fault Monitoring and Reporting: Comprehensive for both.
  • Compliance with Safety Standards: All the normal suspects such as EN 54 Praesensa adds marine certification.

Differences

1. Network Technology:

Bosch Praesensa: Employs an IP-based network architecture using OMNEO media networking technology. This allows for high scalability and interconnectivity with other systems on the network. Praesensa can also be configured in a dual-network setup for redundancy, ensuring continuous audio distribution even in case of a network failure.

Control interface module

Baldwin Boxall Vigil 3: Utilises a proprietary fault-tolerant Ethernet loop architecture. While it supports both copper and fibre network interfaces, it doesn't rely on standard IP networking protocols like Praesensa.

Fibre optic interface (copper version available too)

2. Configuration and Control:

Bosch Praesensa: Offers a web-based configuration interface accessible from any computer on the network. It also features a mobile app, allowing remote control of audio volume and other parameters. Praesensa also supports integration with third-party control systems via an open interface.

Baldwin Boxall Vigil 3: Relies on a dedicated PC application connected via USB for configuration and message upload. Configuration data and messages are stored on each BV3AOM8 module and automatically replicated across the system. Control is primarily handled through dedicated touchscreen microphones.

3. Power Distribution:

Bosch Praesensa: Utilises standard PoE (Power over Ethernet) for powering devices on the network. It features a multifunction power supply that can power multiple amplifiers, controllers, and call stations.

Baldwin Boxall Vigil 3: Employs a proprietary Power Over Ethernet (POE) mechanism carried on spare conductors of the Ethernet cable, simplifying cabling during rack design and build. Power sources are either a dedicated battery charger module connected to a BV3AOM8, or 24V DC connected to a BV3AIM2/4 audio input module.

4. Microphone Configuration:

Bosch Praesensa: Maps microphone buttons to system functions and zones within the Praesensa configuration software. It also offers a desktop call station with a touch screen for user-friendly control.

Baldwin Boxall Vigil 3: Supports both native Vigil 3 touchscreen microphones (BVRDTSM) and legacy Vigil 2 microphones (BDM & BFM). For BVRDTSM microphones, button mapping is done through the microphone's configuration, while for BDM/BFM microphones, it's performed in the Vigil 3 configuration software.

5. User Interface:

Bosch Praesensa: Offers a modern, graphical user interface accessible through web browsers and mobile apps. It also features customizable call station displays with touch screen functionality for intuitive operation.

Baldwin Boxall Vigil 3: Primarily relies on dedicated touchscreen microphones for user interaction. Configuration is performed through a PC application with a hierarchical tree view for navigating settings.

Summary

Both Bosch Praesensa and Baldwin Boxall Vigil 3 offer robust and feature-rich voice alarm and public address solutions. Praesensa leverages IP-based networking, a centralised web interface, and modern user interfaces for enhanced scalability and flexibility. Vigil 3, on the other hand, focuses on a proprietary fault-tolerant architecture, simplified power distribution, and compatibility with legacy microphones for ease of installation and maintenance. The choice between the two systems ultimately depends on the specific requirements and preferences of the application.

Hi Anthony, I'd really like to dig into the detail, I just need to sit down and read your techy stuff. Would you be against sending me the install and commissioning docs. I'm just finishing reading through TOA and Zenitels wall box solutions. Hope you are well. We've got November the 5th tonight in Lewes, it is always hell. ????

Have you seen our Unicorn PAVA and integrated Evcs? Doesn’t use Ethernet and can do 250m on fp200 can be up to 250 addressable circuits over 64 cabinets and is Designed to mount in risers like a fire panel- drop me a line
