Company Values are BS. But not for the reason(s) you think…
I started Hirewell in 2001. In 2020, we put out our corporate values. Why did it take us almost 20 years? Good question. Some combo of procrastination and you know, trying to get the company off the ground. Early on, our mantra was “work hard and don’t be an asshole.” We were small for a long time and that seemed good enough. Plus, I’ve always felt they are a bit contrived.
As we grew, I recognized we needed something to guide us.?To embody who we are and how we operate.?We’ve tweaked them a bit?since then.?But they are mostly the same. I’m happy with them and feel they embody us and our work.?But that doesn’t really matter.?
Why??
Because there are 100 other people at Hirewell. And they are the ones talking to clients and job seekers.?And prospective hires. What they think and feel matters way more than what I write on our website.
Every year we utilize Holistic to conduct our Employee Experience Analysis.?One of their questions - “In your own words, what are Hirewell’s values?”?Needless to say, no one got them 100% right.?But their answers were as good (or better) than what we’d come up with.
My colleague?James?actually came up with this topic.?And he wrote a blog about it.?Check it out.?
