Change can be like trying to piece together a puzzle that's been thrown in the air, especially during a merger. And I've been through a couple myself. Mergers are complex, time consuming, full of challenges and opportunities. They can either be the trigger for massive growth or a hurdle that can cause even the most stable companies to fall. From personal experience, the difference often lies in how the process is handled. Here, I'll share some of the key takeaways that have helped me and some things I'd recommend to focus on in the midst of company mergers.
Communication is Key
It's a simple rule that holds true in every aspect of business, but it's never more critical during a merger. Communication is everything. Without it, you're floating around in a sea of rumours, uncertainty, and fear. From the outset, establish clear, open lines of communication with your team. Keep everyone informed on what the changes will mean for the company and, more importantly, for your team. Transparency is paramount, and I have always been open with my team at every stage. Keep in mind that people will quickly shift to thinking the worst, and thoughts about losing their jobs will be top of mind. Therefore, no matter what you discover, jump on a call to inform everyone, even if it is for 5 minutes. This helps to mitigate rumours, stress, and confusion.
Expect the Unexpected
No matter how well-planned a merger may seem, surprises will happen. People react in unforeseen ways, and huge hurdles can jump out of thin air. Rather than being caught off guard, build a culture that anticipates change and adapts to it. Encourage flexibility in your teams and try to act quickly. By fostering resilience, you can help your team remain nimble and responsive to any curveballs that may come your way.
Things Can and Will Change in a Heartbeat
The only certainty in a merger is change, and sometimes that change comes faster than you can send a slack message. Other times, changes happen at a snails pace. Therefore, it's vital to stay on your toes and be prepared to pivot at any moment. Be proactive rather than reactive; be the first to learn and welcome change, be the first to learn new tech, new ways of working or be the first to reach out to new teams. Ensure your decision-making abilities are on point. There’s no time to sit back and wait for things to unfold.?

Positive Mindset Helps
A big one for me. Attitude is everything, and during a huge change, it can make or break the positive culture or ways of working you’ve spent building for so long. A positive mindset not only helps you cope with uncertainty, but it can inspire others around you. With the view that a merger is an opportunity, you can adapt quicker, which will propel your growth and expertise. Celebrate small wins along the way to keep morale high, and when challenges arise (which they will), approach them with a problem-solving attitude. Positivity is contagious, and it will significantly protect the company's culture during this transition.
Look Out for Opportunities to Grow and Take on More Responsibilities
A merger can offer a wealth of opportunities. It's a chance to redefine roles, take on new responsibilities, and grow your career in directions you never thought of. Keep an eye out for gaps that you can fill and initiatives that you can lead. With a willingness to step up and embrace new challenges, you will become more valuable to the company and your team, which can position you well for progression once the dust settles.
Work On It, Not Just In It
No matter your role, working on the business rather than in the business helps you understand the future direction of the company. Focus on having a clear understanding of the business model and strategy for the merger, because it's so easy to get lost in day-to-day tasks. By putting some time aside to grasp the broader vision, you can visualise how your individual success will play a valuable part and how you can impact the changes.
Start of a New Adventure
While navigating a merger may seem daunting, with the right attitude it can become an adventure rather than a struggle. It can also lead to personal and professional growth opportunities. By focusing on communication, preparing for the unexpected, adapting quickly, and maintaining a positive mindset, you'll not only survive the merger; you'll thrive in it.
