Company culture is the shared values, beliefs, attitudes, and practices that shape the behaviour of people in the organisation. It determines how employees perceive the work environment and the ways they engage. There is no right or wrong culture, it is only a sum of an individual’s behaviours under contextual guidance.

Now, let's look at how the company culture impacts employee retention:

  • When a company’s culture aligns with employees' values, they would like to engage more with the company and stay longer.
  • It gives employees a sense of belonging that makes them feel involved, valued, and appreciated.
  • A good company culture prioritizes employee development, with these employees would like to stay longer.
  • When there is a work-life balance, employees would like to stay more with the company.?

As an employer looking to retain employees, it is important that you also consider hiring new employees with the company’s culture in mind so they wouldn’t pose a difficulty and obstruct the already existing company’s values. One of the ways to do this is to assess new hires with the company’s values during interviews, conduct behavioural interviews and offer a trial period for a specific duration to know more about them.?

In our present age, there are some brands with a distinct culture and some of them includes:?

When your company has a distinct culture, employees will be willing to stay and grow with the company.

On this note, it is important to highlight some of the importance of company culture which includes:

  • A good company’s culture will attract new talents and retain employees
  • It improves employees' productivity level because they feel valued and engaged in their work
  • It fosters creativity and innovation as employees will be willing to share ideas.
  • It helps improves teamwork and collaboration

Before, we end this ride, it is important to know how company culture can be improved, and to do that, you need to define the following:

  1. Define the process of recruitment, compensation, promotion, reward, and punishment.
  2. Define work ethics and expectations from employees and management
  3. Define dress code and appearance
  4. Define the company’s philosophy and beliefs in simple terms
  5. Define the ideal work environment that would be suitable for your company’s daily task
  6. Define relationships and tone of interactions with clients and also employee relations.

When these are clearly defined and mapped out, the next step is to communicate it to employees for implementation purposes and you will be sure to see the result.
