IT companies are embracing quantum computing.

Quantum Computing is a new technology that uses quantum mechanics laws to solve problems that traditional computers cannot solve. Quantum computers calculate the probability of an object's state before measuring it, rather than just 1s or 0s, which means they have the potential to process exponentially more data than classical computers.

If a supercomputer is stumped, it is most likely because the large classical machine was asked to solve a problem of high complexity. Complexity is frequently to blame when traditional computers fail.

Complex problems have many variables that interact in complicated ways. Because all the different electrons interact, modeling the behavior of individual atoms in a molecule is a difficult problem. Choosing the best routes for a few hundred tankers in a global shipping network is also difficult.

IBM has long been regarded as a leader in quantum computing. It was the first to provide cloud-based quantum computing access in 2016, allowing virtually anyone to access these previously prohibitively expensive resources. Cloud computing has since become a dominant business model for many organizations.

IBM is constantly releasing new versions of its quantum computing technologies to provide more to its clients. It intends to release the Osprey 433-qubit processor in 2022. Condor, a 1,121-qubit processor, will succeed in 2023. At that point, IBM is hoping that this system will solve problems faster than a supercomputer.

This steady progression map indicates a clear vision of the future as well as a strategy for getting there. IBM also has the resources that some startups lack to achieve these lofty goals. Today, IBM Quantum makes real quantum hardware available to thousands of developers, a tool that scientists could only dream of three decades ago. These engineers deliver ever-more-powerful superconducting quantum processors at regular intervals, progressing toward the quantum computing speed and capacity required to change the world.

These machines are not like the traditional computers that have been around for more than a half-century.
