Community is more valuable than content.

Someone recently asked me what communities I belong to as a check in question in our company stand up. This got me thinking and also made me wonder about whether I should start a new community. What would hold us together? An interest in the same topics? Is that content? Not more content please....
Yes, yes, "content is king" when it comes to all things digital, but it’s time to shift our focus. The real game-changer? Community. I have been doing academic research on the power of community and my eyes are really opening.
Content can inform, entertain, and even inspire. But it’s community that creates lasting relationships and builds loyalty. When people come together around shared interests or goals, they form bonds that go beyond consumption. These connections lead to collaboration, support, and a sense of belonging—elements that content alone cannot provide.
When was the last time a piece of content truly resonated with you? Chances are, it was when you shared it yourself … when it sparked a conversation or led to an exchange of ideas within your community. Engagement is more valuable than impressions. Communities amplify voices, encourage dialogue, and create spaces where individuals feel heard and valued.
In an age where fake is everywhere and authenticity is paramount, communities thrive on genuine interactions. They allow us to bring our true selves and connect with others who share our interests and passions. Authenticity creates ?trust—something that can’t be achieved through content alone.
Building Relationships

Communities are not just about building networks; they’re about cultivating relationships. When we prioritise community over content we create connections with co-creators and togetherness with people who are not just passive consumers but active participants in our journey. What ?journey?
Well, that’s up to you, where you’re going and and who you want to travel with… As for me it's my wedding anniversary today, and I'm celebrating togetherness.

Don’t your love that human connection always wins?

4 个月Thank you for this. If we are honest with ourselves, what we are really after most of the time - while fighting for attention with content, or just fighting online - is connection and belonging. We humans go about looking for it in very strange and complex ways, and my hope it that this weird digital economy will eventually make it blindingly obvious.

4 个月Absolutely! Also: community before commodities/consumerism/capital .... This 'mantra' is so alive in me now that I moved from a tiny, Hobbbit-like country in Europe (Slovenia) to the US.

4 个月Reflecting on my life journey I have come to realise that its essence - the joys and sorrows - is rooted in the quality of my relationships. It is relationships that have shaped me into who I am today. And the most important relationship of all is the one we cultivate with ourselves. Thanks for an insightful post Kirsten. Congratulations on your wedding anniversary! ??
