Martin Luther King Jr.
Good morning!
As a tribute to Black History Month, I thought it only made sense to use my Wednesday article to focus on Martin Luther King Jr.
Martin Luther King Jr was born on January 15th, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia. King went to Morehouse College at the age of 15 where he studied law and medicine. Martin had 2 sisters and one brother.
For today, I am going to focus on the March on Washington and “I Have a Dream” speech. These events are looked at as pillars in the civil rights movement. In August 1963 250,000 people gathered in Washington D.C. due to inequality and unfavorable opportunities for non-whites in the work force.
Martin was asked to speak, and he spoke last because all of the other presenters wanted to speak first in fear of not getting any attention from the press. “And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream.”
Martin continued on to deliver a 16-minute speech that was originally supposed to only be 4 minutes. The speech is looked at as a catalyst to what would follow in the 1950s and is known as a big part of influencing Kennedy’s decision to create more job opportunities for those who had been turned away in the past.

I will end with this quote:
“And when this happens…we will be able to speed up that day when all God’s children, Black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old N***o spiritual, ‘Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!’”

Thank you Dr King for having the courage to stand up for human kind and for striving to impact and inspire those near and far to you. We could all use a little courage today. Find strength in numbers and find causes worth fighting for. If there is change you are hoping to see in the world then start today by inspiring the one person who you live with every day...yourself!
Today is your day! Get out there and inspire somebody.
