Community Health Design
Last week I presented a paper at the Eleventh International Conference on The Constructed Environment.
When I started out in architecture, I used to think that I would someday design stadiums that would bring people together. What I didn't realize at the time is that when you bring people together and ask them what they want, it's a nearby grocery store, safe places for their kids to play and get to school, and a nice park that they can walk to.
That realization and the work I've done since represents my shift towards practicing community health design.
In the paper, I reflect on how my own personal experiences in architecture prompted me to explore the fields of participatory design and public health, and how I have applied what I have learned through the work of Dotte Agency.
The three projects I explore as case studies are the Jersey Creek Trail, the Dotte Mobile Grocer, and Project Pipeline KC.
I look forward to expanding on all of this in my dissertation over the next year, but for now you can get a sneak peak by reading my paper here or watching my recorded conference presentation below:
